🚲 ISLAND CYCLES & BEACH GEAR RENTALS STORES ARE CLOSED TODAY 🚲

Since it seems like half the island is currently sitting in the ferry line… we figured we might as well close up shop today. 😬⛴️

All joking aside, we really do feel terrible for all of our visitors who have been stuck here trying to get home. We know this isn’t how anyone planned to end their vacation, and we’re hoping that ferry line starts moving a whole lot faster today! ❤️

Our Avon and Rodanthe stores will be closed today, but you can still order rental equipment anytime online at www.islandcycles.com.

We hate to admit it — and maybe this is a little selfish — but we didn’t totally hate having you stuck here with us for a couple extra days.

The island was a little quieter, everybody had a story, and we got some bonus time with a bunch of you.

But for everyone who really needs to get home, there’s finally some good news:

Emergency ferry service from Rodanthe to Stumpy Point started at 11 a.m. today.

Rodanthe → Stumpy Point today:
11 a.m. • 2 p.m. • 3:30 p.m. • 5 p.m. • 8 p.m. • 11 p.m.

Loading is first-come, first-served, space is limited, and NCDOT says to expect long lines and delays. The trip takes about two hours.

If you’re trying to come onto Hatteras, visitor restrictions are still in place, so Rodanthe-bound ferries are currently limited to essential personnel, critical business vendors and permanent residents.

Crews are also working toward a temporary road around the damaged section of N.C. 12 as conditions allow.

So yes, vacation extension: now optional.

We’ll miss having you trapped here with us. Just a little.

We have some real information tonight.

Dare County has issued its latest Hatteras Island access update, and there are finally some concrete plans taking shape.

If you're already here and worried about getting home, NCDOT is preparing emergency ferry service between Rodanthe and Stumpy Point. It is not running yet, and officials are asking people not to head to the ferry terminals until the schedule is announced Sunday.

NCDOT also plans to begin work on a temporary roadway Sunday, conditions permitting.

If you're trying to get to Hatteras, visitors and non-resident property owners are not being allowed onto the island right now, and Dare County is asking people with upcoming reservations not to travel toward Hatteras yet.

There still isn't a timeline for normal road access.

But this is the part we wanted to hear tonight: there is a plan moving forward.

Ferry preparations are underway. A temporary road is planned. Crews are working the problem.

We know a lot of people here are worried about getting home, and a lot of people off-island are wondering when they'll be able to get here. We'll keep sharing confirmed information as it comes out.

Hatteras has had a rough couple of days. It still knows how to put on a sunset.
