There's a stretch between the last of the leaves and the first of the skiers when almost nobody comes up here.

It's the best the cabin gets. Fire going, river loud, nothing on the calendar, nobody around. If you've been meaning to take a few days that aren't about anything, this is the window.

Happy Labor Day from the cabin.

Up here at 3,700 feet, the first weekend of September already feels like the start of fall. Cooler mornings, the creek running loud after summer rain, and just enough warmth left in the afternoons to get in the water one more time.

Hope your long weekend has a little of both.

Three honeymoons. Four anniversaries. One elopement.

We didn't set out to be that kind of place. It turns out a cabin with one good bed, a fire, and a river outside is where people come to mark things.

A cancellation just freed up September 24-27 at This Old River Cabin (three nights, Thursday through Sunday).

This is one of the best weekends of the year in Banner Elk. The leaves are just starting to turn, the nights are cool enough for the wood-burning fireplace, and the Elk River is still running strong right outside the cabin.

The cabin is an 1884 hand-hewn log structure with a hot tub on the deck above the river, a stone sink carved from a rock pulled out of the creek, and the kind of quiet you stop noticing after the first hour because the water never stops.

If you have been waiting for a fall weekend in the mountains, this is it.

Halloween in the mountains is a quieter business than Halloween anywhere else. A 140-year-old log cabin, the creek loud enough to hear from the bedroom, no streetlights for a good distance in any direction — exactly as atmospheric as you're imagining. Guests keep telling us the quirks are the point.

Two of these come from our guests. The third is ours.

for coffee and for breakfast get named in our reviews constantly. Bella's, up in the Food Lion center on Tynecastle, is the one we're personally obsessed with. New York style pizza, and we are not objective about it.

One guest drove all the way to Roan Mountain for dinner and told us it was worth the trip. We're still taking notes.

Guests keep telling us the water drowns out everything. The road, the week they just had, whatever they came here to stop thinking about.

Natural cleaning products. Essential oils instead of air freshener. Linens washed in something that doesn't announce itself when you get into bed.

One guest wrote that she loved it because "I use them myself." We didn't advertise any of it. She just noticed.

The week of October 14th is still open, and at 3,700 feet that's usually about when the color turns up here. Leaves on 140-year-old logs, the river running high after fall rain, and a fire already laid when you walk in. This is the week people drive four hours for.

The stone basin in the bathroom was pulled from the river running past the house and hand-carved to fit.

It's the kind of detail you'd never notice from the listing photos and never forget once you've washed your hands in it.
