The Rapidan River, flowing 88 miles (142 km) through north-central Virginia in the United States, is the largest tributary of the Rappahannock River. The two rivers converge just west of the city of Fredericksburg. The Rapidan River begins west of Doubletop Mountain in Shenandoah National Park where the Mill Prong meets the Laurel Prong at Rapidan Camp, approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Big Meadows. The river defines the border of Orange County with Culpeper and Madison Counties.

Sections of the lower Rapidan River are preserved by a conservation easement.

The Rapidan River was the scene of severe fighting in the American Civil War, and historic sites such as Ely's Ford, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Kelly's Ford, and the Battle of the Wilderness are nearby.

The name is a combination of the word "rapids" with the name of Queen Anne of England. Originally, it was known as the Rapid Ann River.

The Rapidan River ranks #38 in Trout Unlimited's Guide to America's 100 Best Trout Streams. In 2000, the upper Rapidan River was nominated for EPA designation as a Tier III Exceptional Waterway. In 2001, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality rejected the application, citing uncertainty about the impact of the designation.

My Autumn Leaves

I watch the woods for deer as if I’m armed.
I watch the woods for deer who never come.
I know the hes and shes in autumn
rendezvous in orchards stained with fallen
apples’ scent. I drive my car this way to work
so I may let the crows in corn believe
it’s me their caws are meant to warn,
and snakes who turn in warm and secret caves

they know me too. They know the boy
who lives inside me still won’t go away.
The deer are ghosts who slip between the light
through trees, so you may only hear the snap
of branches in the thicket beyond hope.
I watch the woods for deer, as if I’m armed.

Beautiful guest house with open floor plan and loft area. Has a kitchenette, dining table and remote controlled fireplace. Breathtaking views and seasonal use of heated pool (pool is open late May to early October) and heated hot tub (year round). Very private. 7.8 miles to James Madison's Montpelier, 36 minutes to Charlottesville's Downtown Mall, 15 minutes to Orange, 16 minutes to Gordonsville, 34 minutes to Culpeper. We regret we cannot accommodate children under 5 due to safety reasons.

The space
Beautiful 246 acre working farm with 6 horses, two mini-horses, four mini-donkeys, 75 chickens, 5 cats and 1 dog.

Guest access
Farm tours can be scheduled in advance upon availability for $15 per adult, $8 per child. Limit of 5 people per tour. Tours generally last 1 to 2 hours. Tours need to be arranged in advance and paid for before tour begins. We accept cash and credit cards. Hiking and Rapidan River access available with permission.

Other things to note
Pool is open late May to early October, which includes in ground hot tub. Above ground hot tub is open year round and is for the private, exclusive use of Air BnB guests.
