Attracting Beneficial Insects with Overripe Bananas

I usually use the insides of old bananas in smoothies or banana bread, and toss the skins into the garden beds, where they disappear after two days — probably the opossums eating them. But I liked this tip: hang overripe bananas in your garden.

Their sweet smell draws in butterflies, bees, and ladybugs, while also repelling pests like aphids and gnats. As the banana breaks down, it feeds the soil directly as a natural fertilizer, attracts earthworms that boost soil health, and once it's done its job, it can go straight into the compost pile.

NSVRC maintains a directory of organizations that lists state and territory sexual assault coalitions, victim/survivor support organizations, and local communities of color sexual assault organizations. You can contact your state or territory’s coalition to find local resources that provide services to survivors. You can also find a r**e crisis center or sexual assault program near you by searching RALIANCE's directory of local programs. Visit the website in our bio to access this information.

The R**e, Abuse, & In**st National Network (RAINN), organizes the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline. The Hotline is a referral service that can put you in contact with your local r**e crisis center.

You can call the Hotline at 1-800-656-4673, or access RAINN’s online chat service.

Supporting someone who has experienced r**e or another form of sexual violence or abuse can feel really hard. But by being there and listening to them you're already helping. You might be afraid of saying or doing 'the wrong thing'. But you don't have to be an expert.

We have dos and don'ts on our website to help and support information if you feel that you need to talk to someone: https://bit.ly/3XNBfLm
