Cabin 3 got a new roof over the last couple weeks thanks to Vince and his brother. They made a good team and this roof should last awhile.

Vince says he should be ready to “head south for the winter” sometime in early November… and by “south,” he means back home to Brainerd!

That’s about 2 hours south of Balsam, so technically he’s not wrong. But I’m pretty sure most Minnesotans (including me) have a different definition of “heading south for the winter.”

What a way to wrap up our last fully open weekend of the season at Balsam!

The fall colors were absolutely gorgeous, the temperatures were in the 80s, and Vince even managed to sneak in some fishing time!

This week, we’ll be shutting off the water to the campground and most of the cabins, with Cabins 1 and 2 staying open a little longer.

Each year seems to get a little busier than the last, and this season was no exception! Now we’re shifting gears into fall mode and hoping to use MEA weekend to pull docks and get a start on next year’s firewood.

October is here and we’re down to the last 10 days of our 2026 season!

Between picking up supplies for a new roof on Cabin 3 and doing many, many loads of laundry as we close up most of the cabins, we’ve also soaked up some of the beautiful fall weather. We took a gorgeous pontoon ride and spotted a few swans and enjoyed a walk on the trails where we found some shaggy mane mushrooms. They were delicious!

We’re thankful for another good season at Balsam and all of the wonderful people who helped make it one!

Shopped the Bovey Public Library used book sale today to restock the shelf in the game room. 📚 Always fun to have a business reason for a guilty pleasure! Looking forward to curling up with a few in the offseason. ☕️

By my rough count, over the last month at Balsam, Vince and I have been blessed to host our moms, stepdads, our kids, 12 of our siblings, over 2 dozen nieces and nephews (from 10 months to 37 years old), 18 cousins, 8 aunts and uncles, and a handful of friends. And I’m probably forgetting someone!

We’ve enjoyed ATV trails, fishing, floating, campfires, food, drinks, more food, and plenty of laughs.

With both of us coming from pretty big families, Balsam is a great place for everyone to come together, slow down a little, and make some memories.

One of our favorite things about Balsam is seeing how special this place is to so many families. We get to watch families make their own memories here every week, and it means a lot to us to be a small part of that. ❤️

I found a couple old pictures that I think might also be your dad and uncle!

Just wanted to share this photo with you of my dad and my uncle sitting on the mantle of the lodge. It was from the 1950's , I'm 75 and I was about 9-10. We spent several years there fishing. Glad to know it's still there.

Twenty-some years ago, Vince was holding our little Lynn in front of the Big Balsam Camp sign.
Next September, she’ll be back at that same sign—this time with her fiancé, Creo, getting married here at Balsam Lake Resort.
It’s amazing how quickly time passes, and we’re so thankful this place gets to be part of another chapter in our family’s story. ❤️ 📷 Wandering
