Around here, the best projects often start with an idea and whatever materials you can find.
When our son decided his go-kart needed a little makeover, he got to work turning it into his own little Jeep. He measured, cut, taped, drew, and watched for every delivery that might yield more cardboard⦠then set to work making his idea come to life.
Honestly, their love of farm vehicles and hauling each other around has been going on for years. It started with little toy tractors and makeshift wagons, and now it just looks a little different. ā¤ļø
But maybe even more than the Jeep makeover, the story of the go-kart itself makes me proud and reminds me that some of the best lessons reveal themselves along the journey.
He and his sister saved their money for it over time⦠the dollars made selling lemonade and iced tea during blueberry season, money tucked into birthday and Christmas cards from grandparents, gifts, and all those little bits that add up when you have something you really want. They saved for two years, working together toward something that would be theirs.
Not a fancy go-kart. Not the most expensive. One we found used that needed some work, but that they could call their own.
I love the patience it took to save toward a specific goal, the little bits of financial learning woven into the experience, and the camaraderie of a sibling team working together toward something they really wanted.
I love seeing what happens when the kids have an idea, the freedom to try it, and the chance to figure things out for themselves.
And of course, I love seeing him drive my mom around the farm⦠and the occasional ride when I get to be the passenger. š„¹š„°
