To All Our Friends, Family and Loyal Guests
It is with heavy hearts that we announce our bittersweet decision to officially step out of the restaurant-inn business and into much anticipated retirement. Mary’s at Baldwin Creek will officially close as of May 23, 2021. It’s a strange time in the world to be doing so. There’s no real final farewell or huge party to celebrate our 38 years as part of this wonderful community. But the time has come for us to move on and enjoy a new adventure.
We invite you to join us for one last dinner this weekend. We will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for inside, patio and take-out for a final meal created by Chef Doug Mack. Stop by, say goodbye, reminisce. We also encourage you to redeem any outstanding gift certificates before we close. These can also be used towards quarts of garlic soup, coffee mugs, wine glasses, vests, t-shirts.
Be assured, however, that this is not goodbye completely. We are staying in the area and will be working for our daughter Laura at lu.lu Ice Cream in Vergennes to help her grow that business. We also plan to begin working on small side projects, the ones we always had wanted to get to, including an update of our cookbook - that may or may not include our legendary Cream of Garlic soup!
We also plan to continue leading our Culinary Tours in Tuscany, with hopes that as of next spring we will again be there introducing our US friends to our Italian friends.
We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to celebrate countless joyous occasions with you – from birthdays and anniversaries to weddings and reunions; numerous charitable events and our annual Christmas community benefit. What began as a little 50 seat restaurant on Main Street in Bristol grew into a place that has welcomed thousands of guests and employed hundreds of people over the years. We are humbled to have been a part of so many lives. Mary’s is special.
We feel very lucky knowing how many lasting friendships we have made at this remarkable place. We are also so grateful to our staff who over the years has become like family. And of course, this whole community helped us raise our two remarkable daughters, Laura and Martha.
Now is the time for us to ask you for your help.
We know how important Mary’s has been in our own lives for these many decades, but we would very much like to hear to hear how Mary’s has been part of your life. Please send us your favorite memories in any format that you’d like - photos, videos, formal notes, scribbles on cocktail napkins (do we have these anymore?)! Share with us your own personal Mary’s stories. Our first retirement project will be to compile these memories into some sort of historical booklet!
While we are saddened for this chapter to end, we leave knowing that a new couple will carry on. Kate Baron and Jason Kirmse, with young children (much like us when we first came here) will reimagine the place very soon. And although it will not be Mary’s it will definitely be another special place where memories will be made.
So, for now, please remember to send us your memories. And do keep an eye out for news on our Culinary Tours and plan to visit us in Vergennes.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.
