Thank you all for your compliments and well-wishes. We were overwhelmed by the response. We have to say that things did not go quite as planned. On the first official day of retirement, our daughter brought her son from Phila for a visit. But at midnight we had to rush Kim to the hospital with a painful gall bladder attack. We were left with a crying baby and no milk. Plus the fact that the baby had never even tried formula! But all is well now, and we are going to start over. (If the inn had been open, our guests would have had to feed themselves)

Retirement Announcement - It is with mixed emotions that Pat and I announce our retirement from the hospitality industry. The Frederick Inn permanently closed as of June 30. This has nothing to do with Covid-19. We have long been planning our new lifestyle. Pat would like to do some part-time consulting. I am anxious to return to some of my hobbies. We are both looking forward to the day when we can start traveling and spending more time with our children and grandchildren. The inn has been acquired by The Body Image Therapy Center out of Baltimore and Washington, DC. It is our understanding that they will be introducing themselves soon. The only thing that we know for certain is that they will not be operating as a bed and breakfast.

Pop-Up Library - A reminder that the we are still offering used books for the taking. Also, a few puzzles, DVDs, etc. Just stop by our front porch in Buckeystown. Easy parking in the back. There is no need to knock. If you would like to leave an item or two behind for others, well that would be okay too.

One way to brighten up your day is to take a trip to take a trip to Thanksgiving Farms. They not only have flowers, but also local cheese, eggs, and produce.

When Pat and I cleaned out the fridge at the inn, we found a bag of oranges. It took me awhile to figure out what to do with them. I'll let you guess.

Our Story

Owners & innkeepers of Frederick Inn Bed & Breakfast, Pat and Kirk Horstman invite you to experience hospitality at its finest. They relocated to Frederick County from southeastern Pennsylvania after purchasing the inn, and they couldn’t be happier.

Pat is a retired pharmaceutical executive. She worked for Merck and Bristol Myers Squibb in all types of fields. These included quality control, vaccine production, business process improvement, and global supply chain. She grew up in a warm and welcoming Italian home and is excited to be able to apply the cooking and hospitality skills she learned from her extended family. Pat’s hobbies revolve around her three daughters and two granddaughters.

Kirk was a civil engineering consultant. He worked on all kinds of projects, but his main area of focus was related to site design and environmental restoration. His hobbies include genealogy and historic preservation. He was part of a group that restored a 250-year old grist mill to working condition (Evans Mumbower Mill). Kirk has particularly enjoyed traveling around Frederick County and scoping out all the interesting sights and scenery. He cannot wait for you to ask him a question about any landmark or business establishment. Eateries (and “drinkeries”) are his specialty!

Renovations to the inn took from 2012 until 2015. With the help of their consultants and contractors Pat and Kirk became experts in design, construction, and permitting (see blog page). During that time, they also practiced their culinary and hosting skills. So come put them to the test.
