Band-tailed pigeon seen by MCSP docent Kerry during his bird walk last Saturday morning at the King Gillette Ranch. It was so immersed in eating berries it didn't seem to notice us at all. It was a gray morning with no sunlight.

Band-tailed Pigeon - King Gillette Ranch in Southern California
We see this bird often at Malibu Creek State Park and King Gillette Ranch across the road (Las Virgenes Canyon Road). It is our largest pigeon, and is about twice the size of a dove. We are in the northern-most part of their range, which extends along the west coast of the USA and far into South America. (Photo and caption by docent Kerry Perkins)
