If you have ever wondered what Napa Valley feels like during harvest, September is the month to come. This is when the valley goes to work. Trucks loaded with freshly picked grapes move before sunrise, crush pads are busy throughout the day, and by mid-morning you may catch the unmistakable scent of fermentation in the air. Wineries are bringing in the new vintage, tasting rooms have fresh stories to tell, and there is a sense of activity throughout the valley that you simply do not get during the quieter parts of the year. While Cabernet Sauvignon is the primary crop in Napa Valley, the region also produces diverse wine grapes such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Franc, as well as non-wine crops including olives, hay, and local nursery crops.
September also brings some of our favorite Calistoga weather. Mornings begin to cool, summer crowds start to thin, and downtown Calistoga is only about a 10-minute walk from the front door of The Craftsman Inn. Park the car, walk to dinner and tasting rooms, and enjoy being here for one of Napa Valley's most interesting times of year.
