Small communities run on relationships and sometimes, rumors. I'm choosing to meet this moment with openness, documentation and direct conversation.

I'm not sharing this to invite pity or argue with people online.
This has been hard. It's exhausting to feel as though every ordinary decision is being scrutinized and to hear people assign intentions to me that aren't mine. I've spent considerable time and money responding, lost relationships with longtime renters now “neighbors", but the hardest part has been the misinformation peddled because of it and feeling misunderstood by some in a place I love.

If you have a question about me, my business or my intentions, I hope you'll ask me instead of someone speaking for me.

Sent to us back in 2014 from guests from California. I love the sunset and the silhouette of MacNaughton’s Retreat and the pump house in the background, showing its same location for the last 30+ years. It’s been a privilege and pleasure to provide and serve accommodations to thousands of guests over the years (current sign or the Byron Muljo county original from 1996) We are so grateful and thankful for everyone who has reached out over this insanely petty situation. Better days are on the horizon and let me be very clear, I think zoning is very important but also very dangerous in the wrong hands when weaponized for neighbor squabbling and not the true intention.

Either the county will continue managing zoning or remove this authority and leave enforcement in the hands of the county's townships.

UPDATE!!! EGLE (Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy) The environmental protection agency for the state of Michigan has visited and confirmed North Shore Cottages is in no way of violation for any of the numerous bogus allegations from the Keweenaw County Zoning Administrator or neighbors she's coached. EGLE also confirmed they have NEVER ONCE called Keweenaw County for anything regarding me or the cottages. I have FOIA'd emails showing someone is not honest and committing a crime in her position. We will move ahead with the lawsuits and our new legal counsel (from out of the area) is ready to move forward. Unbelievable that all of this is over pettiness regarding a sign.

We thank you all for your support and kind words, calls, emails, texts, visits, and even mail:) We may not post for a while but know we are fighting the good fight and in our hearts know this will work out in the end. The truth shall prevail and illegal use of government will be punished. In this moment I am reminded of my grandmas strength, resilience, determination, and passion for this place we've called home since 1927. For now we have to get to work on this while staying focused on providing our guests with the best possible service and comforts here at North Shore Cottages. It's been an amazing season as usual here at Tamarack Waterworks, and so very thankful for our amazing clients and friends.

We are grateful for the truth coming to the surface and more to come as this draws out. Yesterday was a perfect example of how a government agency should conduct and serve the people. 🙏🏻

UNBELIEVABLE!! Another complaint has been sent to me regarding my property. This time I’m being accused of damning up Brewery Creek like a beaver 🦫 This follows multiple bogus complaints over the past several months. EGLE (Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy) has been called by ZA Sue Hockings with multiple previous environmental allegations involving my property and they found no violations. They assured me there is nothing for me to do as I did nothing wrong. Despite that, I continue to receive new complaints. Now her threats of $60k in fines look so foolish with confirmation from EGLE. I am sharing this because I believe the public should be aware of what has been occurring and being allowed by our elected representatives. This is beyond overreach, this is outright harassment!
