🌲❄️ Getting Monarch Wildlife Wayside Refuge & Park Ready for Winter! 🦋

Well, I've pretty much got everything put away for the winter here at Monarch Wildlife Wayside Refuge & Park. The educational signs on the 4-foot wooden stakes, the donor markers along Tribute Lane, and all the other seasonal signs that don't stay out over winter are stored away.

All the chairs and tables are in the garage now, too. I did leave a couple of chairs out in front of the Visitor Center, just in case we get some nice weather and someone stops by and wants to sit outside for a while and visit.

I'll bring those last two chairs in once the temperatures start dropping and stay in the 30s.
Because of How I display the HUGE American flag here that was generously donated by my friend & supporter of MWWR & Park, I will be taking that down for the winter as well sometime soon, as it hangs pretty close to the ground & it will get destroyed by the snow and freezing rain the way the wind whips through here in the winter. Ile bring it in, wash it, fold er up and store it away till spring to when I open the park back up around Memorial Day Weekend each year.

It's that time of year again in the Wisconsin Northwoods! Just getting things buttoned up and ready for winter, which I'm really not a fan of at all! I'd much rather be enjoying the warmer weather, plants, pollinators, and all the activity around the Refuge!

🦋 ❄️ WINTER VISITOR INFORMATION ❄️ 🦋

Although Monarch Wildlife Wayside Refuge & Park, S.P. is closed for the season until Memorial Day Weekend, the Visitor Center may still be open during the winter under certain conditions.

Because the Visitor Center is located at my current residence and serves as the present home of MWWR & Park, there may be times when snow and winter weather make it difficult for me to keep the driveway, parking area, walkways, and decks cleared for visitors. I am currently the only person maintaining the property and cannot always get out to shovel immediately after a snowfall.

For this reason, from November 2 through Memorial Day Weekend, once snow begins to accumulate, I kindly ask that you please call before making the trip or check the Monarch Wildlife Wayside Refuge & Park page for any posts regarding Visitor Center hours and availability.

I would hate for someone to travel a long distance, spend time and fuel getting here, only to find the driveway blocked by snow or the Visitor Center unavailable that day.

During the winter months, the Visitor Center will generally be available:

✅ By Appointment Only

✅ When the OPEN sign is displayed

✅ When a Facebook post announces that we are open

Please call ahead to make sure:

• I am available

• The Visitor Center is open

• The driveway and parking areas are accessible

• Winter weather conditions allow for safe visitation

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. As MWWR & Park continues to grow and expand in the future, I hope to improve visitor access during all seasons. Until then, your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your support of wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship.

🚑 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR WILDLIFE TRANSPORT 🦉🦌

Monarch Wildlife Wayside Refuge & Park, S.P. is looking for dependable volunteers who may be willing to help transport injured, sick, or orphaned wildlife when needed.

Most wildlife brought to my Injured & Orphaned Wildlife Drop-Off Facility is transferred to Northwoods Wildlife Center in Minocqua, Wisconsin for professional rehabilitation. Occasionally, if Northwoods Wildlife Center is full, wildlife may need to be transported to Wild Instincts Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

In most cases, you would not be expected to drive all the way to the rehabilitation center. Arrangements are typically made for you to meet one of their transport drivers at a location in Price County so the animal can be handed off and continue its journey to the rehabilitation facility.

When transporting for Northwoods Wildlife Center, the meeting location is often the Northwoods Supper Club parking lot in Fifield, Wisconsin. Similar arrangements would be made when transporting to Wild Instincts.

At the present time, my vehicle is experiencing issues that make longer-distance travel difficult. Because of this, I am seeking a small network of volunteers who may be available when wildlife transport needs arise.

Volunteer Requirements:

✅ Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle
✅ Able to receive and send text messages
✅ Willing to transport wildlife carriers safely and responsibly
✅ Able to stay in communication during transport if issues arise
✅ Dependable and willing to help wildlife in need

If you are interested in volunteering, please send me:

• Your name
• Your phone number
• The best times to reach you

Every transport helps give an injured or orphaned wild animal a second chance.
