We at Twister Rentals know how stressful it can be to move your animals, so we would like to extend some preparation tips to make the job easier.
1) Plan ahead. If you need to move them next week, reserve a trailer now. Get your catch pens set up well in advance. The animals need to be familiar and comfortable with them.
2) Prepare the animals. Feed them inside the catch pen for several days prior to moving. Leave the gates open so they can move freely, but get them comfortable with coming in and being around you. This part is non-negotiable, especially when working with unhandled or young animals.
3) Be patient. The less an animal has been handled, the longer your preparation phase needs to be.
4) Practice the exit. If you will be loading through a chute or alley. Shut the other gates and make them exit through that path several times prior to moving day.
5) Practice loading. If you have an old trailer, that is safe for animals, practice loading them into it, then let them out a side door.
6) Expect delays. Unhandled animals aren’t usually fans of shiny new trailers. Consider renting an extra day so they can get more comfortable seeing the trailer prior to moving day. Safely block the door open, then place some feed near the rear of the trailer so they can investigate and gain familiarity.
Bonus tip: Catch pens work better when set up along a fenceline. It provides a more natural funnel they will follow in.
It’s all about making the animals comfortable with the process and reducing stress, both on you, and them.
