🌿 Preserving Nearly 100 Years of Everglades History!

The Everglades is rich in history, and one of its most treasured landmarks is the historic Bank of Everglades Building, constructed in 1927 for Barron Gift Collier, a prominent figure in Southwest Florida’s development.

For 35 years, the building served as the home of the Bank of Everglades before the bank relocated to Immokalee in 1962. Over the decades, this historic property took on new roles, first as a rooming house and later as the headquarters of the Everglades Echo newspaper under Reba “Rusty” Rupsis from 1979 to 1990.

The building eventually became a bed-and-breakfast before closing in 2017. After decades of weathering storms, including Hurricane Irma, this important piece of Old Florida history now has an opportunity for a new beginning.

In 2020, the building was donated to the Everglades Society for Historic Preservation, with plans to restore it and eventually establish the Everglades Area Visitor Center and Trail Town Headquarters.

For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples called South Florida home. Later came Spanish explorers, the Seminole Wars and attempts to drain and develop the wetlands.

By the 20th century, people began fighting to protect this extraordinary ecosystem. In 1947, the same year Marjory Stoneman Douglas published The Everglades: River of Grass, Everglades National Park was officially dedicated.
