The Adventure Lab recently welcomed more than 125 freshmen from St. Martin de Porres High School for a week of hands-on healthcare career exploration!

Throughout the week, students stepped beyond the traditional classroom to explore healthcare careers using medical equipment and techniques. Activities included CPR and emergency medicine, basic patient intake and clinical skills, and phlebotomy, with each student completing a simulated blood draw using professional medical equipment. Students also worked directly with healthcare professionals volunteering from University Hospitals, who shared their career experiences, introduced students to the wide variety of roles within healthcare, and helped connect the skills students practiced to real-world patient care.

“We want students to do more than hear about a career, we want them to experience it,” said Mike Evano, Director of Great Lakes Adventures. “When a young person can use the equipment, practice the skills and talk directly with someone working in the field, that career suddenly becomes much more real and attainable. That’s what the Adventure Lab is all about.”

By combining hands-on learning with direct access to working professionals, the program gives students an opportunity to discover career pathways, build confidence and begin imagining where their own interests and abilities could take them.

As part of a special partnership with Cuyahoga Community College - Western Campus , participants rolled up their sleeves in Automotive Maintenance with the Adventure Lab at Tri-C's Advanced Automotive Technology Center.

Working with Professors Austin Gatt and Alex Gale and their faculty, learners performing oil changes, exploring routine vehicle maintenance, and gaining hands-on experience with the tools and techniques professional technicians use every day.

Thanks to this ongoing partnership with Cuyahoga Community College and the Great Lakes Adventures, participants had an extraordinary opportunity to move beyond the classroom and discover what a career in the automotive industry can really look like.

Saint Martin de Porres High School students brought their design ideas to life in our Graphic Design Exploration Course!

Over the 4 sessions, these students built a strong foundation in graphic design by exploring core design principles, visual elements, and industry-standard design tools and software. They then applied these skills to develop original brand identities inspired by their own interests and passions. Throughout the process, each student thoughtfully considered brand identifiers, target audiences, and visual hierarchy to create a cohesive and intentional identity.

After completing their brand guides, students translated their digital designs into a physical medium through printmaking. Using linoleum block carving techniques, they transformed their submark logos into hand-carved printing blocks and produced their first piece of branded merchandise!

The course concluded with presentations in which each designer shared their creative process, design choices, and final deliverables with an audience, demonstrating their ability to communicate both conceptual and visual design decisions.

Congratulations to all of our designers on an outstanding showcase of creativity, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design.
