Some towns get their name from a river or a founder. Tightwad, Missouri got its name from a fish. 🐟

The story goes that back in the early 1900s, a local mail carrier bought a chicken from a merchant on credit, expecting to pay with a fish he'd caught that day. The merchant sold the chicken to someone else for a higher price instead, and the mail carrier came away calling him a tightwad. The name stuck to the whole crossroads, and it has stayed that way for over a century in Henry County.

Today Tightwad is barely more than a general store, a post office, and a scattering of homes along the road, but the sign out front still draws people who want a photograph next to a town named after a broken promise over a fish. It is the kind of place you could drive past without noticing if you did not already know the story. 🌾
