Turn off the highway. Five private cabins, 40 acres, a pond with a paddle boat, and a private hot tub on every deck. Fall in the Shawnee Hills looks like this. 🍂

One mile. Sandstone streets shaped thousands of years ago. Zero regrets. 🥾

The Giant City Nature Trail starts on a long wooden walkway and ends in the “Giant City Streets,” narrow paths between giant rock walls.

How did the “streets” form? About 12,000 years ago, melting glaciers and shifting ground caused huge blocks of sandstone to slide apart, leaving narrow canyons between the cliffs.

Look closely at the walls (but please don’t carve). Two brothers, Albert and T.W. Thompson, carved their names here in February 1862, while home from the Civil War.

This Saturday around The Hills. Here's the plan for 10/24, in order:

12–5 PM · Friends of the Shawnee Forest Celebration at Alto Vineyards. Swamp Tigers take the main stage 2–5. Tickets at the door, and every ticket supports the Shawnee National Forest.

12 PM · Carbondale Halloween kicks off with the Candy Walk, then the Pumpkin Race at 2 and the final night of the Pumpkin Glow at 5:30.

4 PM sharp · Thrill the World at Main & 4th in Carbondale. A worldwide Thriller dance. Yes, really.

3–6 PM · Ethan Stephenson live at Feather Hills Vineyard & W**ery, right next door to the cabins, then you end the night back at the cabin relaxing in your private hot tub.

Pick one. Or pick all of them. Your hot tub will be waiting.

11/14: Saluki Military Appreciation game, 1:00 PM, Saluki Stadium

11/21: A daylight hike to Pomona Natural Bridge (fi***rm deer season runs 11/20–11/22, so wear bright colors)

11/27–11/28: Holiday Open House on the Shawnee Hills W**e Trail, 11 AM–6 PM

Save the date: Lights Fantastic in Carbondale, 12/5

Peak color: last week of October. Follow us into November, because the Shawnee Hills aren't done showing off yet. Red maples, gold hickories, and a hot tub with a front-row view.

Bluffs that drop straight into a lake. 20 minutes from your cabin. 🍂

Cove Hollow Trail runs along the sandstone bluffs above Cedar Lake. Expect rock shelters, a slot through the cliff face and big lake views.

It’s 3.3 miles one way. Walk as far as you want, then turn around and head back.
