Did you know?! 👀
Wyoming is super cool and here’s 10 more reasons why. 🤠
Interesting Fact of the day: 10 Tidbits About Wyoming!!!
1. Wyoming isn’t just land-locked, it’s a doubly-landlocked state! Which means all the states around Wyoming are also land-locked. Land-locked means not having direct access to oceans and coastlines, aka. having to cross borders to get to the coast (and conduct seaborne trade).
2. Most folks think Alaska is the least populated state. Nope, that’d be Wyoming. In fact, Wyoming’s ~578,000 population is lower than the country’s 31 most-populated cities!
3. Folks who live in Wyoming are called Wyomingites. (By the way, such a term is called a demonym: other demonyms are American, Texan, and Long Islander.)
4. We unfortunately do not have any pro sports teams in Wyoming. 🏀 🏈 ⚾️
5. Our state sport is the rodeo! YEEHAW! 🤠 🐎
6. Have you ever heard of a craton? It’s an old, stable part of the Earth’s top layer called the crust. We here in Wyoming have a special craton that runs through, the Wyoming Craton. Ours is the core or central one binding the entire North American continent together—which used to be two separate land masses! The Rockies, and the Tetons, are a consequence of that binding-together. Geology is pretty cool!
7. The Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is Wyoming’s largest airport! Over 800,000 passengers annually pass through it.
8. Wyoming was land for various tribes, including the Crow, Lakota, and Shoshone. Then it became part of the Spanish Empire. Then it became part of Mexico’s Alta California territory. Then it was ceded to the US in 1848. There are quite a few French names for places and things too because of the many French-Canadian frontiersmen here during the early 19th Century
9. Wyoming has 32 islands! More than half of them are in Jackson Lake and Yellowstone Lake.
10. Wyoming’s the 10th largest state by area.
