One of the most beautifully preserved old homes in Uniontown 🤍 🎃

Around Halloween, we think of old, historical mansions and houses as being haunted, creepy, and spooky, but some are quite charming. Here is the beautiful home of our Historical Society president and her husband all dressed up for Halloween. The Buckelews are so creative! Too bad I couldn’t get the full moon in the photo as it is beautiful tonight! I couldn’t get a photo of one of our Board Member’s house, but if you are driving on Route 40 look across from Walgreens and you will see she has a serious spider infestation! Post your spooky house photos on this thread! And have a great Halloween season!

Check ups are imperative to reach optimal health.

I have big daydreams for Uniontown…

We have the historic, walkable, & I believe… charming, downtown but… imagine our city with every storefront filled with local thriving business. If you’ve been to the Uniontown Farmers Market at Bailey Park…. Imagine each vendor as a shop along Main Street, Beeson Ave, West Fayette St… etc…

Do the decisions of our local leaders reflect growth…. Or health.

Do our OWN decisions reflect growth, or health.

Notice. Imagine. Create.

One of the main reasons our towns are in such poor condition is that we keep equating growth with success.

That is equivalent to suggesting weight gain is a good measure of individual health. Obviously there is so much more to consider. We understand this intuitively on a personal level, but we seem to lose all sense when it comes to our civic lives.

Growth doesn't dictate health. If anything, it's quite the opposite. Every meal isn't healthy, some are though. Putting on fat is clearly unhealthy, but adding muscle is beneficial. It really just depends.

Building more roads, dollar stores, and subdivisions is the civic equivalent of putting on fat. Sure there is more, but more isn't better. It's worse. More apathy architecture, more disconnected communities, more discontent. More infrastructure to maintain, more police and fire, all while the heart of the community has to pump harder just to stay alive.

Muscle is dense and density is the key. Adding muscle strengthens the heart, speeds up metabolism, and helps bones stay stronger later in life. Building with density utilizes existing infrastructure, builds social connection, and strengthens the heart of town.

We are built to walk and our towns were too. We were built to be close to one another and our towns were too. We thrive when our towns are built with the health of residents in mind.

We have to confront the false promise that growth equals health. After 40 years of adhering to this tired trope, we can safely say it just isn't true. We have to start measuring civic health, not just growth.

With this in mind, I created a civic health assessment as a means to measure the overall health of our communities. It helps us move past the growth mindset and understand if our towns are actually healthy.

I hope you'll take a few minutes to complete it and get a clearer picture of the health of the community you call home.

Help to Save & Preserve our incredible local theatre 🎭. Save Old Places. Foster Civic Pride. ❤️ Next time you’re at The State Theatre… take a moment to feel the space. Then imagine the contrast of sitting on a metal folding chair in a space with concrete floors, flouresent lighting, plain white walls, and a tiny platform made from plywood and cinder blocks acting as a stage in front of you.

If we don’t stop to appreciate the magnificent beauty around us… it will eventually cease to exist.

Notice.

Fayette Gives is just under two weeks away!

We are proud to be participating in this county-wide day of giving alongside 100+ non-profits inspiring and making an impact throughout our region.

This year, our Fayette Gives campaign is focused on the significant preservation needs of the building and protecting everything under our roof. Building preservation protects more than the building itself. It protects our students and audiences, the programming on our stage, and the community that continued to bring our theatre to life.

Mark Fayette Gives on your calendar for this November 5th from 8am-8pm. A link to our profile is in the comments and will be live for donations on November 5th. Eligible donations will receive a 10% match, enhancing the impact of your donation!

Where I grew up. 🤍 The Village of Indian Head… a tiny blip on the map along route 711 between Normalville & Melcroft. I spent more time playing in the “crick” beside my house than I did with other kids, we had a deep freezer and stock shelves in my basement to stock up after going to “town” to get groceries, & I know at least the last…. 5 ish branches of my family tree by ♥️…. The rest are in the White book at my parents house. Small town girl indeed.

1944 Picture of Route 711, and the old Indian head bridge at the town of Indian Head, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Many Years Ago, Before I started researching and sharing history here on Facebook, I thought that maybe Indian Head was named for a rock that looked like the head of a Native American. There are some really amazing big rocks that I've seen that look like the head of a human in our truly amazing Mountainous region. So when I discovered that the town was named for its location near the headwaters of Indian Creek. I still question the name because Indian Creek originates further north in the Forbes State Forest within Donegal Township, Westmoreland County, near the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Jones Mills. I do know from my years of researching Native American History, that the Native American tribes hold the confluence of two streams or rivers to be deeply sacred , and Indian Head is the confluence of Back Creek and Indian Creek. So I'm sure in the early days of the town of Indian Head, many Native artifacts were found there , so maybe that is the reason for the towns name? Who Knows ? All I know is that I myself consider Indian Head to be a very special place, because I lived near there and was a Member Of The Big Dog Gym on Back Creek Road. There are many more personal reasons that I could explain why I Cherish this part of the world , but that would be a whole book. Indian Head is located along Pennsylvania Route 381, 10.4 miles (16.7 km) east of Connellsville, Pa, and has a post office with ZIP code 15446, which opened on December 17, 1853. The surrounding area of Saltlick Township was settled during or shortly after the time of the American Revolution, with early settlers engaging primarily in agriculture and later in coal and mineral extraction. The development of transportation routes through the Indian Creek valley contributed to the growth of small communities such as Indian Head. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region’s economy was influenced by coal mining and rail transportation, although Indian Head itself remained a small rural settlement. The community is served by the Connellsville Area School District. > ( The 1909 Devastating Fire ) > On May 10, 1909, a catastrophic fire destroyed the town of Indian Head. Local accounts state the fire started in a building used to store wool when two boys were playing with matches. The flames consumed nearly the entire community, including the planning mill, gristmill, sawmill, slaughterhouse, ice house, scale house, buggy shed, wagon shed, grain house, bark shed, shoe shop, Sparks' store, and local homes. Following the devastation, the community made the decision to rebuild. Western cattle baron D.B. Zimmerman, drawn to the region by coal, acquired the area, turning Indian Head into a company town. Under his leadership, it functioned as a company town complete with a company store built on the former Sparks Supply foundation. D.B. Zimmerman ran the operations until his death in 1929, after which members of the Mellon family purchased the town. > ( Picture From https://www.facebook.com/RememberingSaltlickTownshipandsurroundingareas ) Information Link #2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Head,_Pennsylvania

A late September/ early October Fayette Co. to do… 🍁 Wear the cute dress, invite a friend, & take a scenic car ride to Confluence while listening to Stevie Nicks or the Practical Magic soundtrack. Go to Tissue Farm for a coffee, scone, & ART. Then head over to River’s Edge Antiques…. That’s where I got my little vintage blue suitcase. Take a walk downtown… need a bicycle accessory? Hit up their bicycle shop. Lastly…. Enjoy dinner at The River’s Edge Cafe… it is the most warm & lovely dusty pink home with the most delicious, fresh, food! Thank you Jessica Zebrak Higbee for taking me here for my birthday last year & inspiring this post…

I’m often asked…. So, what is The1848, what is Vito’s Teahouse?

The Uniontown 1848 is an old brick house that is home to three uniquely different, all equally cozy, short-term rentals. Yet…. It’s so much more than your typical Airbnb. These spaces aren’t just places to rest your head, they have been carefully curated to encourage you to feel the pride I have in where I’m from, the place I call home, Uniontown. They should feel like being welcomed into a dear friend’s home. They also serve as a visual example of what TLC, intentional decisions, & creativity, can do to an otherwise regular old & forgotten home. 🏡 Save Old Places. Foster Civic Pride.

To make the house even more dreamy…. We have a tea house!!!

Vito’s Tea House is owned and operated by Amy Hancyzk, and is located on our first floor. Yes, TWO Amy’s! Wee!

Give Vito’s a follow to see the unique offering she has along with Amy H.’s contact information where you can reach out to her and plan/ schedule your own private tea party. 🫖

Thanks for being here. 🤍☮️ ☕️
