UPDATE: Closure Between Rockwood and Markleton

Somerset County has closed a segment of the Great Allegheny Passage between Rockwood ( mile marker 43.8 ) and the parking lot at Markleton (mile marker 50.0) due to an active landslide triggered by recent heavy rain and high winds. The earth continues to move and rocks and trees are falling each day. Do not bypass the barricades. There is no detour.

The Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy has arranged and is underwriting a free shuttle for bicyclists and hikers between the Rockwood and Markleton trail access points from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Tuesday, June 24, Wednesday, June 25, and Thursday, June 26. Many thanks to Allegheny Trail House and 2WheelEscapes for providing these shuttles. The shuttles will be first-come, first-served; please be patient as there may be waits of 30-45 minutes.

Beginning Friday, June 27, there will be fee-based continuous daily shuttle service running between Rockwood and Markleton from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, seven days a week, until July 15. In Rockwood, look for the shuttle in the parking lot next to the welcome center. In Markleton, look for the the shuttle in the adjacent parking lot, which has shade and restrooms. The shuttle fee per person/bike combo is $20. This fee can be paid via cash (preferred) or credit card directly to the shuttle driver. The shuttles will be first-come, first-served; please be patient as there may be waits of 30-45 minutes. Many thanks to Allegheny Trail House, Bill’s Car and Transport Service, 2 Wheel Escapes, and Wheelzup Adventures, for teaming up to provide this unprecedented service. Together with the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy and Somerset County, all parties will review the possibility of extending this service. past July 15.

Geotechnical engineers deployed by Somerset County are investigating this landslide to provide input into potential solutions. As of this writing, a quick and inexpensive solution appears unlikely.

The Casselman River and Laurel Hill Creek join the Youghiogheny River in picturesque Confluence. Young George Washington explored the region in 1754 during his days as a surveyor and noted that the three bodies of water together formed the shape of a turkey foot. To this day Confluence sits in the Turkeyfoot Valley, poised on the eastern edge of Ohiopyle State Park and its vast recreational opportunities.

Confluence is a favorite stop for its many B&B’s, guesthouses, restaurants, cafés, and an espresso shop. Two bicycle/pedestrian bridges connect the town’s peninsulas. A full-service bike shop, the Turkeyfoot Valley Historical Society, and several retailers anchor its town square, itself reminiscent of New England with a lovely wooden gazebo perfect for a break from traveling.

Don’t miss the sights and sounds of Pumpkinfest, a beloved fall tradition in Confluence, held October 4-6. Make an overnight of it and enjoy the best autumn colors in the Laurel Highlands!
