Coronado Summer Shuttle Kick Off!

Glorietta Bay Inn is thrilled to be part of this annual program, providing free transportation throughout the summer for both residents and visitors. It's a true testament to who we are as a community—making sure everyone can get around easily and enjoy all that Coronado has to offer.

The Summer Shuttle supports local businesses from north to south, connecting riders to shopping, dining, hotels, the Ferry Landing, and our beautiful beaches. By providing convenient access throughout the city, the shuttle helps residents and visitors explore Coronado without the hassle of parking while supporting the businesses and attractions that make our community so special.

We encourage everyone to take advantage of this free service, leave the car behind, and enjoy everything Coronado has to offer this summer. Since 2017, Argeline has been a cherished part of the Glorietta Bay Inn family. Over the years, she has worn many hats and has truly been a gem to our team. Always greeting everyone with a smile, Argeline became someone our guests knew and loved, and someone deeply respected by her team.

She stood with us through COVID, returned stronger than ever, and has worked tirelessly ever since.

Did you know that in her nine years with us, Argeline has cleaned around 17,500 rooms and worked over 7,400 hours in laundry? Those incredible numbers reflect just how dedicated and hardworking she has been, but they only tell part of the story. Her kindness, warmth, and positive spirit are what truly made her so special.

Argeline, you will be deeply missed, and while we are so happy for you as you begin this well-deserved retirement, it won’t be the same without you.

We love you, we thank you, and we’ll miss you so much.

John D. Spreckels didn’t just bankroll the Coronado Public Library — he practically gave it its opening chapter. In 1909, the railroad magnate and owner of Hotel del Coronado hired architect Harrison Albright to create a permanent Classical Revival library worthy of the booming seaside town.

More than a century later, the original 1909 structure still holds court, seamlessly folded into today’s 40,000-square-foot library as the charmingly refined Spreckels Reading Room — proof that good architecture, like a good book, never goes out of style.

Think your Christmas tree is impressive? On Dec. 25, 1904, Coronado outshone just about everyone.

That’s when the Hotel del Coronado unveiled what is widely regarded — and still debated — as the first electrically illuminated outdoor living Christmas tree in the United States. The towering Norfolk Island pine, planted on the hotel’s grounds when the resort opened in 1888, was strung with roughly 250 white electric bulbs, glowing against the Pacific backdrop at a time when electricity itself was still a novelty.

The sight was nothing short of astonishing. In 1904, most American homes relied on gas lamps or candles, and only a minority of families even had Christmas trees at all. A massive, living tree illuminated outdoors with electricity — visible from across Coronado — felt almost magical. For many who gathered on the hotel’s lawn that season, it was their first glimpse of electricity being used not for industry or necessity, but for celebration.

As with many “firsts” tied to Christmas traditions, the Coronado claim comes with nuance. Historical records show that the Edison Electric Light Co. illuminated a cut outdoor tree with electric lights in 1882. What distinguishes the Hotel del Coronado’s display is that its tree was living, rooted in the ground — a distinction that has earned it lasting recognition in holiday history.

The tree itself had already been part of the hotel’s landscape for more than a decade. By 1904, the Norfolk Island pine stood about 50 feet tall, its branches adorned not only with lights but also garlands and lanterns, according to contemporary accounts. Visitors and locals alike flocked to the hotel’s front lawn, cementing the tree as both a seasonal attraction and a symbol of Coronado’s growing reputation as a premier West Coast resort.
