Fall is settling into the Missouri River Valley! 🍂 With pheasant hunts underway and our first winter event of the season just around the corner, there’s plenty happening at Missouri River Ranch beyond the fishing.

Our Blast & Cast package brings together two Montana traditions, pairing a morning pheasant hunt on our Preserve with an afternoon on the water, following a plated lunch at the lodge. Guests can also enjoy a full-day wild bird hunt with one of our accomplished local guides.

On the Missouri, cooler temperatures are bringing seasonal changes, and the fishing is following suit. River conditions are beginning to shift, trout are preparing for winter, and some of the most exciting fishing of the year is just getting started.

September has brought cooler temperatures, great fishing, and even better guests. We've had the pleasure to welcome old friends back to the ranch and new groups that left feeling like family.

While we take our angling very seriously at Missouri River Ranch, we've found the fish count is quickly forgotten but the memories and stories you share between the bow and stern of a drift boat are ones you carry with you for a lifetime... but it also doesn't hurt for some of those tales to include big brown trout.

River temperatures are continuing to cool coming out of Holter Dam, with temps in the low 60s and flows around 3,300 CFS.

Tricos are still producing in the morning and evening, while Hopper patterns have been a great mid-day option. We're also seeing some changes in the subsurface game as water temperatures drop, with Sowbugs continuing to produce and fall streamer fishing beginning to heat up.

And speaking of streamers... it's your time, streamer junkies. Brown trout are starting to get increasingly aggressive as the fall spawn approaches, and we're seeing some impressive fish showing interest. One recent encounter even had a guide and guests wondering just how big the brown trout in this river can get.

🍂 Fall has arrived in the Missouri River Valley! 🍂

September has brought some much-needed rain, bugling elk, cooler temperatures, and rising flows on the Missouri. Flows from Holter Dam are now around 3,900 CFS, and the trout are starting to adjust as summer gives way to fall.

With cooler weather and increased flows, fish are moving between their summer lies and the slower, deeper water that fall brings. Meanwhile, the Ranch has been putting on quite a show of its own, with some incredible sunrises and sunsets lately. 🌅

As for the fishing... the trout have been looking up, but that's not the only game in town. Tricos and hoppers are still producing, crawfish and sowbugs continue to fool plenty of fish, and streamer season is starting to make its presence known.

There's a little more to the story, including what's working best as the days get shorter and the browns start preparing for fall spawning season. 🎣

And while you're at the Ranch, be sure to swing by the bar for Sophie's daily drink specials. They're as creative as they are tasty...and we won't tell if you come back for seconds. 🍹

The dog days of summer are starting to fade in the Missouri River Valley, and we couldn’t be happier about it. 🍂

Cooler mornings, shorter days, longer fishing windows, and some seriously impressive wildlife are making their way into the daily rhythm at Missouri River Ranch.

On the Mighty Mo, mornings are all about clouds of Tricos and rising trout. As the day warms, anglers are finding success with Henneberry Hoppers, Micro Chubbies, crayfish patterns, and Thin Mints. The trout may be looking for a little less effort in the warmer water, but they’re still willing to eat a substantial meal.

And there’s plenty happening back at the ranch, too. Chef Justin continues to impress with dinner each evening, while Chef Gavin, our new morning chef from South Africa, has already made quite the impression with his breakfasts and ever-growing assortment of pastries.

River flows are sitting around 3,600 CFS with water temperatures in the mid-60s, and the season is shifting into one of our favorite times on the Missouri.

Cool mornings. Hungry trout. Wildlife in the valley. And a few more weeks of summer left to enjoy it all.

Drop us a line and we'll see you on the Mo.

July is going out with a bang at Missouri River Ranch! 🎣☀️

The last week has been one to remember with birthday celebrations, girls' trips, incredible fishing, and unforgettable wildlife sightings.

Guests have landed some of the biggest trout of the season, while the Canyon Section has been putting on a show with bighorn sheep, including ewes and this year's lambs along the riverbanks. One of our guides even spotted four bears in three days, from a safe distance, of course!

On the water, it's all about getting out early. Morning Trico hatches have been outstanding, followed by excellent hopper fishing as the day warms up. PMDs are still making appearances, and anglers fishing Zirdles, Zebra Midges, and Frenchies have been finding consistent success. Looking for a trophy? Bigger trout are feeding on larger meals, making streamers like Bam Bam Minnows and Sparkle Minnows a great choice.

Current conditions:
🎣 Flows around 3,500 CFS
🌡️ Water temperatures in the upper 60s below Holter Dam
🐟 Please continue to follow your guide's fish handling recommendations to help protect this incredible fishery during the summer heat.

There's nothing quite like summer on the Missouri. Great friends, incredible fishing, abundant wildlife, and memories that last a lifetime.

Drop us a line and we'll see you on the Mo.

Elk herds and some of the biggest trout of the year showed up at the Missouri River Ranch this week 🎣

Warmer water has changed the game on the Mighty Mo. Weeds in the river mean tougher drifts in spots, but they're also holding big brown trout right along the edges. Our boats have been pushing off around 7 a.m. to beat the heat, and trusting the guides' read on the river made the difference between a good day and a float of a lifetime. Multiple guests landed the biggest trout of their lives this week alone.

The elk have moved down into the meadows too. One group counted over 100 in a single field on their evening drive before dinner.

Water temps are sitting in the mid 60s at Wolf Creek, flows steady around 3500 CFS.

Come see it for yourself this summer.

Drop us a line and we'll see you on the Mo.

Full summer swing has arrived on the Missouri, and the terrestrial bite is heating up right along with it. Big hoppers and ants are becoming the meal of choice for trout throughout the valley, leading to some explosive eats on top. Caddis and Tricos are still coming off in thick morning and evening hatches, so thick along the banks one guest swore it looked like campfire smoke rolling off the bushes.

Water temperatures are climbing across Montana, but our stretch of tailwater is holding strong in the low 60s with flows staying consistent around 3200 CFS.

Hoppers are the main event right now. Thunder Thighs and Henneberry Hoppers are drawing plenty of surface eats, and a black and purple Chubby Chernobyl with a small dropper is a great way to search the water just beneath the film. Below the surface, Zonkers and Zirdles have become mainstays on nymphing setups, with bigger, meatier patterns getting the most attention as trout look to make their efforts count in the heat. Trailing a big fly with a small Frenchie or Perdigon has been picking up the fish that are slow to commit.

The streamer bite continues to build as well, with evening anglers along the Wing Dams finding some serious success. Mini Dungeons and classic Buggers have been producing during the twilight hours, and persistence is paying off more than pattern this time of year.
We've also been lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights glowing over the Big Sky on a few recent nights, a nice reminder of just how special this place is.

Rain or shine, the Missouri is fishing exceptionally well right now. Recent rainfall has brought river flows up, kept water temperatures cool, and created ideal conditions for healthy, happy trout throughout the valley.

From the legendary stretch above Holter Lake to the banks surrounding Missouri River Ranch, anglers are finding plenty of action and some impressive fish. Caddis hatches remain strong, Tricos are beginning to swarm, and dry fly opportunities continue to improve by the day. Morning and evening sessions have been especially productive, with rising fish rewarding anglers willing to slow down, lengthen their leaders, and focus on a clean drift.

Dry dropper season has officially arrived, with more trout looking up at foam patterns while small nymphs continue to produce below. On cloudy days, streamer anglers are also finding success, and those willing to stay persistent are being rewarded with shots at some truly memorable brown trout.

The wildlife has been putting on a show as well. Keep an eye out for bighorn lambs, young eagles, and the countless other creatures that call this spectacular river corridor home.

Summer is in full swing on the Missouri, and there is no place we'd rather be.

There's fly fishing. There's wing shooting. And then there's doing both in the same day on the Missouri River — an experience you simply cannot find anywhere else in the valley.

This fall, Missouri River Ranch is offering our exclusive cast & blast package: fully guided, fully all-inclusive, and entirely unforgettable. The river is fishing beautifully, the birds are up, and fall in Montana is something else entirely.

Two trips in October remaining. Link in bio to connect with our team. 🎣🪶

Unbelievable start to the summer at Missouri River Ranch. Flows are holding around 3100 to 3300 CFS, and the dry fly fishing has been incredible with PMDs and caddis stealing the show. After dinner streamer trips along the Wing Dams have been putting trophy trout in the net too.
But the best part of this season has been the people. Guests who feel like family, return anglers we look forward to every year, and a lot of "really good days" at the ranch. Come fish with us. Drop us a line and we'll see you on the Mo.
