Here is the NS 955 passing by the Inn this afternoon, with NS 1776 "250th" unit leading a short office cars train. We believe this train is headed west to Chicago to meet the Big Boy! Thanks to Chris Wallace for the awesome video!

We're excited to announce that the Erie Room and the Western Maryland Room have been upgraded with window air conditioning units — joining the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie and New Haven Rooms, which have been cool and comfortable since last summer.

Whether you're spending a long afternoon on the porch watching NS freight work the grade, or you just need a cool place to rest up before catching an NS Heritage Unit at first light, you'll now find a cold room waiting for you in four of our most popular suites.

Also - we're adding Porch service from the The Yard Office Lounge - if you're watching trains or just would rather sit outside, come on in and let our barkeep know and we'll take care of you from the comfort of our porch. 5pm-10pm Thursday through Saturday.

5/2026 - Preparations underway at Altoona Yard to accommodate the UP Big Boy steam locomotive....
Two new switches were installed for the track known as "10 at Brush" and the MW tracks near 4th street. In this shot, the NS 3011 is sitting on 10 at Brush. Note the panel track extending into the background for the MW tracks. This area is where the Big Boy will spend some of its time in Altoona.
