To accommodate the booming mining population in the early 20th century, the Cripple Creek Hospitality House & Travel Park was constructed in 1901 as the original Teller County Hospital. One more fun thing for this weekend and a little history...Jack Dempsey, who grew up in Manassa, Colorado, really got his start right here in the Cripple Creek District - and much earlier than most people think! From the Cripple Creek Weekly Journal, July 20, 1895: "Jack Dempsey denies the reports set afoot that he is a pugilistic wreck. He says he is worth more as a man than half of those who think that he exists with but one foot out of the grave." Although Dempsey's first professional fight is said to have been in 1914 at the one-time whiskey town of Ramona that is now a neighborhood in Colorado Springs, it was no secret that he honed his skills here for several years before going on to achieve worldwide fame.

Rita The Rock Planter, just minutes from our historic property, is one of dozens of larger-than-life trolls created by world-renowned artist Thomas Dambo. We think she's pretty special: It is Rita's job to plant new rocks so more gold will grow. 😉

Today's featured suite, which happens to be available this Friday: #21, Therapy. When our hotel was built as the Teller County Hospital in 1902, this second floor room was reserved for the superintendent, including James G. Robinson and A.G. Young during its early years. Beginning in about 1907, the county wisely began hiring nurses as superintendents, often referred to as matrons. These included Maggie Driscoll, Grace Smith and our personal favorite, Minnie Gongway who ably ran the hospital during its final years.

This suite is special in many ways. It is located near the top of our sweeping staircase and remains in its original footprint with an ensuite, modern bathroom. There are no guest rooms directly across the hall, making for a more peaceful stay. You will love the elegant pressed ceiling, a gorgeous golden chenille spread on a king-size bed, your own satellite TV and our signature complimentary breakfast in the morning. One of the best things about this room? Our sweet little upstairs veranda is just steps from your door, giving you a spectacular view of our spacious grounds and the hills and mountains around us. Come spoil yourself with a stay here! You can book this or any other room on our website at cchospitalityhouse.com, or call us directly at 719-689-2513.

Today's history tidbit and tie-in to this weekend: The Old Homestead House Museum, Colorado's only bo****lo museum and one of only a dozen such museums in the United States. Beginning in 1894, the Old Homestead on b***y Myers Avenue here in Cripple Creek was the most opulent parlor house in the entire Cripple Creek District. The first madam of the place, Pearl DeVere, reigned supreme here, rebuilding her house after the disastrous fires of 1896 - only to die of an accidental morphine overdose on June 5, 1897. A bouquet of madams followed, running the house for several more years and into the early 20th century.

As time went on, the Old Homestead survived to become the only remaining business house of its kind. The building was reopened as a museum in 1958 with some of the original furnishings, numerous artifacts, and a great story to tell visitors. The guided, family-friendly tour takes visitors through both floors with stories about the house's history, the women who worked there, and the details of running such a business. The museum became its own official non-profit several years ago, relying on proceeds from admission tickets, donations, grants and gifts for sale to maintain this historic building.

For several years now, the museum has also thrown two annual fund-raising events that garner attention around Colorado and beyond. Pearl's Follies is a community event thrown each March, with food, drinks, entertainment, special guests, and other fun activities. The second event is Pearl DeVere Day, which takes place in front of the museum and, as you can see from the poster, is filled with activities, tours of the Old Homestead, vendors, food, live music and yes, bed races right down Myers Avenue. Another highlight of this event is the "Classy Pearl Contest," with prizes for the outfit that best represents the divine Ms. DeVere.

We may add here that our historic grounds and hotel present the perfect photo opportunity for showing off your own outfit for the event. Our reservations are filling up quickly, so make yours soon.
