Patient of the Month

February 2012

Donovan
5 years old

Diagnosis:

Donovan was found to suffer from sickle cell disease shortly after his birth in 2006.

Donovan's story:

Before Donovan was even born, his parents knew there was a strong possibility that he would suffer from sickle cell disease, which is an inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become hard and sickle-shaped, instead of soft and round. Children and adults with the disease may experience symptoms that range from severe pain to strokes, pneumonia, organ damage or even death.

Because Donovan’s mother suffers from a rare form of sickle cell disease and his father carries the sickle cell trait, they prayed that they wouldn’t pass this life-threatening disease on to their unborn child. But shortly after Donovan’s birth, his parents were devastated when tests revealed that Donovan did indeed suffer from sickle cell disease. He was quickly referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude has one of the largest and most active sickle cell disease programs in the nation.

At St. Jude:

At St. Jude, Donovan was started on a treatment plan that included penicillin twice a day to combat infection and checkups every three months. During these visits, doctors monitored his development and did blood work. “We’re grateful because Donovan’s sickle cell disease is very mild,” said his mother. “The hardest part in all of all of this has been the times Donovan has had pain. Sickle cell disease can be incredibly painful and St. Jude helps keep the pain at bay.”

Donovan’s family is thankful for his medical team and for the donors who help support St. Jude. “The donations not only help children battling deadly cancers, they also help children with illnesses like sickle cell disease,” said Donovan’s mother. “Thank you and God bless your good heart for reaching out to give children like Donovan hope for a future free from pain.”

Donovan recently celebrated his fifth birthday, which included a milestone in his treatment. He no longer needs to take penicillin twice daily, and he now visits St. Jude just twice a year. Donovan is a bright, sociable boy who likes to put together puzzles, read and write.

Kiley
2 years old

Diagnosis:

Kiley was found to suffer from retinoblastoma in April 2010.

Kiley's story:

Kiley was a happy, healthy 9-month-old baby girl. Even at this early stage of life, Kiley’s bubbly personality was evident. But one evening during dinner, Kiley’s mother noticed an unusual reflection in Kiley’s right eye. She immediately contacted a local optometrist, who found that not only was the retina in Kiley’s right eye detached, there was also something suspicious about her left eye.

Alarmed, Kiley’s parents took her to an ophthalmologist the very next morning. There, Kiley underwent more extensive tests. Within days, the tests revealed heartbreaking news for any parent: There were tumors present in both of Kiley's eyes. The doctor suspected retinoblastoma, a type of cancer of the eye, and immediately referred Kiley and her family to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.

At St. Jude:

At St. Jude, doctors confirmed the diagnosis of retinoblastoma. Kiley underwent 11 rounds of chemotherapy and several laser surgeries on her eyes. Sadly, she has lost the sight in her right eye, but doctors believe the vision in her left eye has been spared. Kiley is now finished with treatment, but visits St. Jude every four weeks for checkups.

Kiley’s mom is grateful for everything St. Jude has provided for her family. “I knew St. Jude covered treatment-related costs,” she said. “But I just had no idea they would cover our housing, mileage and meals when we’re here. Everything is taken care of for us, and that’s a huge weight off of our shoulders.”

Kiley is an outgoing, funny girl. She loves to play with her baby dolls and color, and she’s close to her big sister. “St. Jude is a wonderful place,” said her mom. “Kiley has stayed happy. They do everything they can for her.”

Hayden
6 years old

Hayden’s story:

Shortly after Hayden’s fifth birthday, he began having headaches and nausea. At first, the doctor thought he had migraines and asked his mother to keep a record of when his head hurt. After only a short period of time, Hayden's headaches grew more frequent. Then, he began having trouble with the vision in his right eye causing him to see double or as he put it, "seeing two." It was at this point, his mother knew there was a bigger issue at hand.

Hayden was referred to an ophthalmologist for further testing. When the doctor examined Hayden's eyes closely, he saw abnormal swelling and immediately ordered a CT scan. The results were upsetting: There was a mass on Hayden's brain. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor, after which a biopsy revealed more devastating news: Hayden suffered from a type of brain tumor called medulloblastoma. Hayden's parents had heard about St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and immediately asked their doctor for a referral.

At St. Jude:

Hayden underwent 31 rounds of radiation treatment, followed by four rounds of chemotherapy to help shrink the tumor. Physical therapy and speech therapy were also a part of his ongoing treatment.

While the idea of watching your child undergo treatment for cancer is overwhelming, Hayden's parents found comfort at St. Jude. "Everything here is positive. You feel like everything is going to be fine," said Hayden's mom. "The hospital is really geared towards children."

Hayden is a happy child who loves to go fishing at the lake, watch Scooby Doo, and play the Wii®. He recently finished his treatment and returns to St. Jude regularly for checkups. To his family's delight, Hayden's most recent sets of scans were stable.
