The Legend of The Dogwood Tree
The dogwood tree was once a large strong tree like an oak tree and was used to build the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Ever since Jesus’s crucifixion the dogwood has never grown large or straight enough to be used for a crucifixion again. It became a small tree with thin limbs.

After Jesus was taken down from the cross, placed in the tomb and on the third day rose again, all of the dogwoods in the forest (which had never bloomed before) burst into bloom. The dogwoods have bloomed at this time of year ever since.

The dogwood blossom has four large petals that represent the cross and carry the marks of Jesus’s crucifixion. The four corners are marked in reddish brown to represent rusty nail holes with blood. The green center represents the crown of thorns and as the blossom ages it often becomes speckled representing blood.

I am not sure of the validity of the legend of the dogwood tree. I do know that every time I see one of these trees in bloom this time of year I think of the sacrifice that He made for me.
