Larry Gallagher wrote a promotional newsletter for the resort in the voice of Bucky, the Lake Lawn mascot. It was called Bucky's Smoke Signals. Written with genuine humor, each issue updated loyal guests on every new renovation and seasonal event, all filtered through the fiction of Bucky reporting on the plans of "Great White Fathers Reader and Zilisch." The newsletter also included family updates on Lake Lawn employees, which tells you something true about what the place was: a resort where the owners believed their guests wanted to know how the staff's lives were going. That instinct is not something you can engineer. You either have it or you don't.

Nobody is in a hurry this morning, and that is the whole idea.

Family pickleball runs 10 to 5 on the Lakefront Lawn. Everything else on the last day of Last Splash of Summer is optional: a long breakfast, a slow walk down to the water, one more look at the lake before the drive home.

Thank you for spending the end of summer with us. Fall on Delavan Lake is quieter, and honestly, it is worth seeing too.
