One of two verified photos of Doc Holliday. This was taken for his graduation from dental school in 1872, before he had been diagnosed with tuberculosis. Shortly after this was taken, he found out that he had the disease and told he had only a few months to live, but that a drier climate might help prolong his life. He moved to Dallas and practiced dentistry there and also in Denison for a period of roughly two years. He was actually a talented dentist but his coughing spasms were not good for his dental practice. He subsequently became a gambler and also a faro dealer, moving around quite often. He later spent time gambling in Breckenridge, Texas, and also as a faro dealer in Fort Griffin, Texas. It was there, while dealing cards at John Shanssey's saloon, that he met Mary Katharine "Big Nose Kate" Horony, a dance hall woman and occasional pr******te. "Tough, stubborn, and fearless", she was educated, but chose to work as a pr******te because she liked her independence. She became Doc's common-law wife and is the only woman with whom Doc is known to have had a relationship. After being given only a few months to live in 1873, he lived for 15 more years, dying at the age of 36 in 1887.

Before he became the legendary gambler and gunslinger known across the Old West, John Henry “Doc” Holliday was a young dentist.

This photo was taken around 1872 during his time at the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, shortly after graduating with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at just 20 years old.

One detail many people miss… he didn’t have the famous mustache yet.

Only a few years later, around 1875, Doc made his way to North Texas and practiced dentistry in downtown Denison before the chapter of gambling halls, saloons, and frontier legends began.

It’s wild to think that the man tied to so much Old West history once worked as a young dentist right here in our area.

Spend the day playing at Elevate Golf Club, enjoy a few drinks, then skip the drive and take the short walk back to Doc’s Holliday Inn. Relax on the porch, fire up the BBQ, and unwind in our 1910 western-themed bungalow right in the heart of downtown Denison.

Great golf, good drinks, and an easy walk home… that’s a win in our book.

Tombstone is one of our favorite movies of all times. We even acquired the historic Doc Halliday Inn in Downtown Denison, TX where Doc had a dentist office in downtown at one time. There have been lots of debate if Val Kilmer did Doc justice in the movie. This newly written article discusses the great lengths that Val went through to become Doc Halliday and it is incredible. His co-stars claim they didn't even know who Val was due to him becoming Doc Halliday. We are so lucky to have so many Doc Halliday and Tombstone items in the Doc Holliday Inn. If you see anything in the wild let us know as we would love to keep adding to the collection in the Inn.

A true method actor in the vein of De Niro and Day-Lewis, Val Kilmer once got so into character on the set of a film, the other actors had no idea who he was.
