Lots of walleyes getting caught on Devils Lake right now. Fished the Spirit Lake Casino Cup yesterday. We ended up in 23rd place with 23.55 pounds with six fish. Took over 30 pounds to crack the top ten. Unbelievable weights. Congrats to the winners and the top ten teams. We caught most of our fish in w**d pockets in 8-12 feet of water with a jig and half crawler. Might have caught 30 fish or more over 18 inches. Been leaning on Northland’s Tungsten Nedster in 3/16th ounce. Really like the Gamakatsu hook on this jig with a half crawler. The game is changing fast with FFS. We won this particular tournament about 5 or 6 years ago using slip bobbers and we had a weight of over 31 pounds with five fish. I want to say that getting a top ten finish during that time was about guaranteed with a weight of 20 pounds or more. Now, you need at least 30 pounds. Something that FFS is teaching us is that there are many more big fish than what we ever imagined and they usually are not doing anything similar to what most smaller fish are doing. We often see them suspended and they have a different life with much of it spent off the bottom. Very interesting times in walleye fishing right now. There is much more to learn.
