October 15: To honor the 60th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, we wanted to introduce ourselves again from this viewpoint! We celebrated with a restoration project of our original well shed. Built around 1910, it has withstood a lot of storms and adventures. We’ve stabilized the structure and given it a fresh coat of white paint. At the same time, we’ve added touchups to the house while keeping the historic feel. Here are a few sneak peeks.
We (Todd and Jacqi Barker) first walked this property exactly 10 years ago today!
We’ve invested a great deal of time, savings, and energy into creating the best representation of hospitality that we can imagine for this unique property. While our brand is Farmhouse on Boxwood, the property started as the Powell House with its construction in 1881 by newlyweds William Powell and Sarah Dillard. She launched hospitality services that first year to supplement the farming, soon influencing the entire region for ecotourism and agritourism. Repeat guests and hearty meals marked her service. Her creative initiatives are one of the reasons for this property being listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of Interior. A generation later, younger Dillards launched the Dillard House as a restaurant and inn—which also has endured to enjoy an amazing redevelopment today! We are excited to see the Dillard House transformed along with our updates as we both look towards exciting opportunities ahead!
