Funday Monday FAQ: YOU REALLY CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP! Part 2

A little Monday humor, since last week’s telephone FAQ was such a hit, we thought we’d share three more REAL phone conversations from Babbling Brook Cottages.

1. THE TRAIN IN JIM THORPE

Caller: “Can we walk from our cabin to the train in Jim Thorpe?” Me: “Well, I’d pack a lunch and some VERY comfortable shoes. Jim Thorpe is over an hour away by car!”

The Poconos cover roughly 2,400 square miles. We’re on the eastern side, Jim Thorpe is on the western side.

2. THE BEAR SCHEDULE

Caller: “Can you guarantee we’ll see a bear?” Me: “Nope.”

Caller: “But you have bears there, right?” Me: “Yes, we live in the woods, and bears live in the woods, too. We don’t see them frequently, but they do live in the surrounding area.”

Caller: “So when can we see one?” Me: “They haven’t shared their schedules with us.”

No designated viewing hours. Not paid employees.

3. THE CHRISTMAS SNOW GUARANTEE

Caller: “Can you guarantee snow for Christmas?” Me: “Unfortunately, Mother Nature hasn’t shared her calendar either. We had snow November 11th last year. We’ve seen snowstorms in early April, too. Sometimes it’s a dusting, sometimes a foot.”

Caller: “But do you THINK we’ll have snow?” Me: “Your guess is as good as mine. We decorate the cabins for Christmas. The snow? Not our department!”

AND HERE’S THE THING…

We live here, and the Poconos are beautiful in every season, whether the foliage is at its peak, snow is falling, or the wildlife makes an appearance. We love sharing our firsthand knowledge, but sometimes the answer really is, “We don’t know!”

And that frost in today’s photo? Taken right here yesterday morning, October 25th. Apparently, Mother Nature is already making her own plans.

Santa Donnie stopped by Babbling Brook Cottages this week with a very special delivery! Our custom cozy sweater ornaments have arrived, and we couldn’t be happier with how they turned out.

Made especially for us by our local artisan, these little keepsakes will be tucked into our Christmas cabin welcome baskets for guests checking in November 2nd through January 11th. Just a little something extra to take home, hang on your tree, and remember your Christmas getaway at Babbling Brook Cottages for years to come.

There’s something special about crossing the historic Dingmans Ferry Bridge over the Delaware River. It’s a little bit of nostalgia that you don’t find in many places anymore.

Did you know Dingmans Ferry actually got its name from the ferry that once carried travelers across the river, long before the bridge was built?

Today, the bridge is still a unique experience. A narrow wooden roadway where you can hear the rumble of your tires as you cross. And then there’s the toll! No E-ZPass, no tossing coins into a basket. Just an actual person collecting your $2 in cash, each way. How old-school is that?

For many of our returning guests, crossing the bridge means something else. They’re almost here! Just three miles from Babbling Brook Cottages, it’s become a familiar part of their getaway. Once they cross, they know that in just a few minutes they’ll be settling into their cabin, ready to relax.

Before running errands, we stopped along the Delaware River to enjoy a beautiful October afternoon. The water was so still that the bridge and autumn-colored hillsides reflected almost perfectly on its surface.

Sometimes the most memorable parts of visiting our area aren’t the big attractions. They’re the little things that give our corner of Pennsylvania its character.

A LITTLE CHRISTMAS MAGIC FROM OUR WOODS!

No, you're not watching a Hallmark Christmas movie... but it sure feels like one! Christmas is coming fast at Babbling Brook Cottages. We are less than two weeks away and we are testing lights, charging batteries, sorting holiday dishware and today I'm starting to prep the Christmas trees! I thought this would be the perfect time to share a little look back at last year.

Snow falling through the trees, the cabins all dressed for Christmas, twinkling lights, and that peaceful feeling of being tucked away in the woods. Sometimes Mother Nature adds a little Christmas magic of her own! So grab your coffee, take 90 seconds, and enjoy a snowy little escape to Christmas 2025 at Babbling Brook Cottages.

Our Christmas Cabins return November 2nd, and we can't wait to bring it all together again!

SUNDAY FUNDAY - YOU REALLY CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!

The phone rings. I answer, “Hello, Babbling Brook Cottages, how can I help you?” And then I never quite know what’s coming next! After more than six years of answering the phone, we thought today we’d share three of our favorite REAL conversations. And yes, we still use a cordless phone with answering machine.

1. THE CABIN OR ROOM?

Caller: “Do you have cabins?” Me: “Yes.” Caller: “Do you rent them?” Me: “Yes.” Caller: “How much is a room for tonight?”

Me: “We don’t have rooms. We have five cabins. Each has its own bedroom, bathroom and kitchen or kitchenette, etc. Think small house 200-500 square feet, and we provide just about everything. Have you been on our website? They are all unique and different.”

Caller: “Yes, but I don’t need anything fancy like a whole cabin. I just need a room for tonight. How much are your rooms?” Me: “We don’t have rooms. And we have a two night minimum stay.”

Caller: Click.
They hang up on me.

Some version of this conversation happens EVERY SINGLE WEEK and yes, sometimes at 2 AM!

2. THE CABIN SHOPPING LIST

Caller: “I need three Bear Claw Cabins, two Fireside Pines, and which other one do you recommend, Stargazer or Snugglers Notch? Because I’ll need three of those, too.”

Me: “We only have one of each. We have a total of five cabins, each with its own name. Have you been on our website?”

Caller: “Yes, that’s how I know I need all of these because we have a large group, atleast 20 people. I’ve been looking at it for a while now, but I can’t seem to book more than one of each. That’s why I’m calling.”

(Well, I think we’ve solved that mystery!)

3. THE MYSTERIOUS LAKE

Caller: “Which cabin overlooks the lake and has the best mountaintop views?”

Me: “Well, we don’t have a lake. And while we’re in the Pocono Mountains, they are not the Swiss Alps or the Colorado Rockies. We’re surrounded by woods.”

Caller: “Oh. OK, can we swim in the lake?”

Me: “We don’t have a lake.”

Caller: “Oh, what do you have then?”

And here’s what we often wonder…

We’ve spent countless hours making our website as informative as possible, with photos, descriptions, policies, and answers to just about everything.

So when we get some of these questions, we genuinely wonder… are we somehow not communicating this clearly enough? Did we accidentally post a picture of a cabin overlooking a lake with the Rocky Mountains in the background? 😂😂

But we also understand that sometimes people just want a friendly voice on the other end of the phone. Someone real who can answer their questions, share a little personal insight, and reassure them that the cabins, the photographs, and the people caring for them are all real, too.

And yes, we love those conversations.

But sometimes, answering these first 3 questions without rolling my eyes is the hardest part of my job!🙄🙄🙄

Nature is pretty amazing when you think about it.

All summer long, the trees are green. And then October arrives, and suddenly there are shades of gold, yellow, orange, and red everywhere you look. All that color, waiting for its moment, and in another day or two, the whole scene will look completely different. Who else woke up to rain?

Yesterday afternoon, we took a walk through our next-door neighbor, George W. Childs Park, before all this color disappears for another year.

The waterfalls were flowing, the sun was bright and the sky was brilliant blue. I found myself stopping every few steps to try and capture the insane beauty in the moment.

Our Christmas Cabins calendar as of October 14. Here's your cheat sheet and quick look if you have not book yet!

Green is available. Red is booked(Wow thats a lot of RED)

A few things worth pointing out:
- Only a handful of weekend stays remain in November and December(2 night minimum)
- Fireside Pines is still available over Christmas(3 night minimum)
- And if you’re not quite ready for Christmas to be over, the first weekend in January still has some openings(2 night minimum)

When you check into your cabin at Babbling Brook Cottages, you’ll always find a few things waiting for you. Your cabin key, welcome basket and gifts, this leather-bound binder, and our white “storybook”.

Now we’re curious… have you ever opened those two books during your stay?

It’s easy to move them aside without giving them another thought. In fact, we often find them tucked into a drawer or piled on top of the refrigerator after guests leave. But there’s quite a bit waiting to be discovered inside!

Our leather-bound binder is your printed stay planner, filled with helpful cabin tips, property information, illustrated maps, and instructions. Plus, instead of a pile of brochures and pamphlets, you’ll find our own curated recommendations for restaurants, shops, trails, waterfalls, activities, and events, complete with websites, addresses, and distances from Babbling Brook Cottages.

Our white storybook, newly updated in 2026, is an easy-to-flip-through picture book sharing the full history of the property and surrounding area, the before-and-after transformation since we purchased in 2020, and our personal story and vision for Babbling Brook Cottages.

We’re often asked if we built the cabins ourselves, which also tells us someone hasn’t opened the book! LOL. Some of these cabins are over 90 years old, so we’d have to be well over 100 ourselves! 😂

So next time you’re here, open up the binder. Read the book. You will be surprised by the history and little discoveries tucked into these woods!

You really don’t know what you don’t know. I went out to get the mail and looked back at our little sign by the road.

People drive past it every day with no idea what’s tucked behind it. But you know. 😉

And right now, October is doing a pretty good job of decorating the entrance.
