**Boys will be boys**
My boys enjoy a little wrestle with their brothers or me every now and then. I guess deer are no different. Maybe these small bucks were pushing each other around to see who would get bragging rights or trying to impress the ladies. Either way it is something I don't see every day and is fun to watch.

**Avalanche**
Some other things to be careful of on Colorado's winter roads are avalanches and rock slides. Avalanches are the deadliest natural hazard in Colorado. With Colorado's 82 mountain passes, almost half of them being over 10,000 ft., you will want to look out around you on these passes. Rock slides can block roads and damage cars. Look out for these all year long. Also check out COtrip.org or CO trip planner for up to date road conditions. Travel safe!

**You should be a prepper!**
Snow has arrived to the mountains of Southwest Colorado. That means it is time to prepare for winter driving. When driving the mountains of Colorado you should be prepared for changing weather conditions. Rain in the valley may be whiteout snow conditions in the mountains. Start by making sure you have good tires with plenty of tread. Also place your tire chains or traction devices in your vehicle. Have an emergency kit that contains an ice scraper, shovel, blankets, flashlight with batteries, snacks, water, sand or kitty litter, and a tow strap. These basics could come in handy if snowy conditions impact your trip. Also check out COtrip.org or COtrip planner before your drive for current road conditions. Drive safe!

**14ers**
14ers are mountains that have an elevation of at least 14,000. Colorado outdoes all the other states by quite a lot, even Alaska. It has 58 mountains that are at least 14,000 feet tall. It is a major hiking/climbing achievement to do all 58 peaks. If that challenge is not enough you can add in Colorado's 637 13ers too. I think you get the point. For high elevation adventure Colorado is the state for you.

**Highest**
Did you know that Colorado has the highest average elevation of all the states? The average elevation is 6,800 feet. The low point is 3,317 feet out by the Kansas state line. The highest point is Mount Elbert at 14,440. Mount Elbert is the 2nd highest mountain in the lower 48 states. Mountain View Lodge is just below that average height at about 6,500 feet.

**Altitude**
To help you get the most enjoyment of your time in Colorado, be aware of altitude sickness. The symptoms can include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. I want you to feel your best while you are here, so take precautions. Drink a lot of fluids to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, eat well, allow time to acclimate. Consider talking with your doctor about medication options. Be aware and plan ahead to get the most out of your time in Colorado.

**McPhee Reservoir**
Great news for our local reservoir! Over the past 2 weeks it has risen 2+ feet. It is still only 44% of capacity, but it is headed in the right direction. I think it only has 60 feet to go to full.

**Co****le**
One of our favorite outdoor games is co****le. At Mountain View Lodge we have 2 heavy duty co****le sets made by my dad. We have really put them to use. When family and friends gather we use them for tournaments. So when you visit Mountain View Lodge be sure to make some family memories with a serious or fun game of co****le.

**Chuckwagon**
The Bar D Chuckwagon is a fun family experience located north of Durango, CO. You get a wonderful meal and are entertained with western music and good humor. There are opportunities to shop, take a wagon ride, shoot targets, pan for gold, throw some horseshoes, or take a short hike. This is a memorable experience with a lot to do. So be sure to add this to your Southwest Colorado itinerary.

**Hay**
Mountain View Lodge is fortune to be next to a hay farm. Those open fields provide us with the wonderful views out across the valley to the Sleeping Ute Mountain. It is also a fun experience to watch the hay harvest process. About 3 times during the summer the fields are cut into nice neat rows and then the hay is baled. The tractors come in with the balers, sometimes 3 of them all going at once even in the dark. Once the bales are made another group of trucks come in and scoop up the bales and stack them on the back of the truck. Then those trucks take the hay stack and unload them near the barn for storage. It is such an organized process and surprisingly it happens pretty quickly. Maybe you will be fortunate enough to be staying at Mountain View Lodge and be able to see the hay harvest.
