Groundwater levels in parts of Maine are hitting record lows as drought conditions worsen across the state.

Nick Stasulis, a water specialist at the U.S. Geological Survey said that monitoring wells in southern and central Maine are registering levels that are below or very below normal for this time of year.

Two wells in Oxford and Clayton Lake in Aroostook County are at their lowest levels on record, spanning 46 and 37 years of monitoring, respectively, Stasulis said.

"I expect without any recharge in the next month or so there will be several more that are right on (the) edge now, and they'll drop below and will also be new records," Stasulis added.

Rainfall in recent weeks has been enough to replenish some rivers, streams and lakes, but not to recharge underground water supplies, according to the Maine Drought Task Force.

Groundwater sources are still struggling to recover from a flash drought that began last year and have not received enough replenishment from winter snowpack runoff or limited spring rainfall, Stasulis said.

"Very heavy downpours are just going to run off, the rain's not really going to make it through," Stasulis said. "So you need prolonged, consistent moisture to saturate that soil so water can work its way through."

The Maine Emergency Management Agency received 156 reports of dry wells in September and early October, quadruple the number of reports received during the rest of the year.

Nearly half of Maine is experiencing severe drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought monitor.

In Lubec, Maine you can stop by the Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurant for fresh seafood served right along the water in one of the most unusual settings in town. Lobster, scallops, crab, and other seafood are brought in from local fishermen, and you can enjoy your meal while looking across Johnson Bay. The restaurant is part of The Inn on the Wharf, which was created from a former sardine factory that finally closed in 2001 after decades of operation. At one point during the mid-1900s, Lubec had more than 20 sardine processing plants. Every table has a water view, and the outdoor deck puts you right above the bay where you may spot seals, seabirds, and other marine life. Lubec is also the easternmost town in the contiguous United States, adding another reason to explore the area. The restaurant operates seasonally from May through October, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can also stay overnight at the waterfront inn, with whale-watching, kayak, and bike outings offered from the property.
