🌲📖 Now It’s Your Turn...

The very same day we sent The Kismet Companion to the printer, I had another idea.

Because apparently finishing one book bought me approximately five minutes before my brain said...

“But what if we made another one?” 😂

This one, though, won't be written by us.

It will be written by you. ❤️

Coming soon to Kismet is a wooden journal called Kismet Guest Stories—80 blank ivory pages waiting for the stories of the people who stay here.

Not reviews.

Not ratings.

Not “the hot tub was great!”—although we're always happy to hear that. 😂

Stories.

Maybe something happened here that made you laugh.

Maybe you saw one of our woodland characters wandering through the yard.

Maybe you celebrated an anniversary, a birthday, or something only the two of you knew was worth celebrating.

Maybe your child discovered something magical in the woods.

Maybe you had a conversation beside the fire that you needed to have.

Maybe you drank your coffee on the deck one morning and realized you hadn't thought about work in two days.

Or maybe something happened that you still can't quite explain.

Whatever it was...

write it down.

A page. A paragraph. A sentence. A drawing.

Leave a little piece of your time at Kismet behind for the people who come after you.

And someday, when those pages are full, we'll close the book, date it, put it on the shelf...

and begin Volume II.

Then another.

And maybe another.

Until our little Storybook Cabin has a whole collection of stories written by the people who loved her for a little while. 🥹🌲

Labor Day weekend at Kismet is officially BOOKED! 🥳🌲

We’re so excited to welcome another guest to our little storybook cabin in the woods. ❤️

🌲📖 We Made a Book.

Okay...this still feels a little surreal to say.

We made a book. ❤️

Over the years, Kismet has given us so many stories.

Some made us laugh.

Some made us cry.

Some reminded us that wonder is usually hiding in the ordinary moments we're moving too quickly to notice.

And some involved Russ saying things that perhaps weren't originally intended for publication. 😂

We started writing the stories down because we didn't want to forget them.

The deer who became family.

The flowers with suspiciously elaborate personalities.

The projects.

The mishaps.

The seasons.

The strange coincidences.

The quiet moments when the woods seemed to be telling us something.

And somewhere along the way, a collection of memories became...

The Kismet Companion

True stories from a little cabin in the woods.

It's not a guidebook.

It's not really a traditional memoir, either.

It's more like sitting down with us at Kismet and hearing all the stories we'd probably tell you if we had a whole evening, a bottle of wine, and nowhere else to be. ❤️

We designed it to look like an old diary—photographs tucked among the pages, handwritten notes in the margins, and all the little imperfections that make something feel as though it has been loved rather than manufactured.

And this week, after months of writing, editing, designing, laughing, remembering—and engaging in a rather dramatic battle with the printer 😂—we did something that made both of us a little emotional:

We sent it to press.

Soon, the very first copy of The Kismet Companion will come home to the cabin where all those stories began.

And after that?

It will be waiting there for you.

Curl up on the couch.

Take it onto the deck with your coffee.

Meet the characters.

Laugh at us.

Stay up too late reading just one more story.

That's exactly what we made it for.

Because Kismet was never meant to be just somewhere you sleep.

She's a place with stories.

And now...

she finally has a book to keep them in. 🌲📖❤️

Well…this doesn’t happen very often. 👀🌲

Kismet Cabin is still available for Labor Day weekend!

If your long weekend suddenly feels like it needs a hot tub under the trees, slow mornings with coffee on the deck, evenings around the firepit, and absolutely nowhere you have to be…this may be your sign. ❤️

Our little Storybook Cabin in Ellijay is tucked into the North Georgia mountains—peaceful and private, but close enough to explore wineries, downtown Ellijay, hiking, good food, and all the fun nearby.

Or you can do what we would probably do…

check in, put on comfy clothes, and barely leave the cabin. 🤣

🌲 Every Storybook Needs a Cast of Characters...

We didn't set out to name the animals at Kismet.

We certainly didn't intend to give them personalities, occupations, family histories, and—in one particularly puzzling case—a French accent.

It just...happened. 😂

Meet a few of the characters who have wandered into our little Storybook Cabin over the years:

🦌 Pretty Boy
Handsome. Watchful. Head of Kismet Security. Frequently found standing in the woods staring directly at the cabin as though he's personally responsible for everyone inside.

🦌 Mama
The matriarch. She has raised her babies around Kismet for years and seems to regard the property as part of the family estate. At this point, we're fairly certain we're the guests.

🐿️ Chubby
Squirrel. Trespasser. Professional napper. Has never worked a full shift in his life and shows absolutely no interest in beginning now.

🌸 Ms. Fleur
Born and raised in Georgia. Has never, to our knowledge, set foot—or root—in France.

Speaks with a French accent anyway.

Botanically: Georgia.
Spiritually: Provence.
Actual travel history: questionable.
Accent: inexplicably French.
Confidence: absolute. 🇫🇷😂

Somewhere along the way, these little characters stopped being wildlife and flowers we happened to see...

…and became part of the family.

Part of the memories.

Part of the story.

And eventually we realized:

Maybe we weren't simply spending time at a cabin in the woods.

Maybe we really were living in a storybook. 🌲📖❤️

For years, we've called Kismet our Storybook Cabin in the woods. 🌲

We called her that because of the red door. The trees. The cozy rooms. The feeling that when you arrive, the rest of the world gets just a little farther away.

But this week, something occurred to us...

Maybe we understood the name only halfway.

Because somewhere along the way, the deer got names. The flowers developed personalities. A certain squirrel began taking unauthorized afternoons off. 😂 And ordinary moments at our little cabin started becoming stories we didn't want to forget.

So we wrote them down.

And now...

our Storybook Cabin actually has a storybook. 🥹📖❤️

We told the whole story on the blog today—including what we're doing next so that someday, Kismet's guests can become part of her story too.

One of our favorite parts of hosting at Kismet is helping our guests discover the places we love about Ellijay.

So we decided to put them all in one place.

Explore Like a Local is now live on the Kismet Cabin website—a collection of some of our favorite places to eat, explore, wander & enjoy while you're here.

These aren't simply places we found on a list.

They're places we actually love.

The restaurants where we already know what we're ordering.
The trails we'd happily walk again.
The places we'd send our own friends when they came to town.

And we'll keep adding to it as we discover new favorites.

Because we don't just want you to have a beautiful place to stay.

We want you to fall a little bit in love with Ellijay, too. 💚

🍣 Explore Like a Local: Ably Asian Cuisine

There are some places we recommend because they're good.

And then there are the places where, when someone asks us where they should eat, we immediately start telling them what to order. 😂

Ably Asian Cuisine is one of those places for us.

Our usual strategy?

Start with the calamari.

Definitely get the Popcorn Lobster Sushi Roll.

And somebody at the table needs to order the Pad Thai.

Sharing is optional.

Regretting that you didn't order enough is entirely possible. 🤣

🥾 Explore Like a Local: Tumbling Waters

Some days call for reservations.

Others call for comfortable shoes, a packed lunch, and somewhere beautiful to wander. 💚

Tumbling Waters is one of our favorite places for the second kind.

The trail winds through beautiful North Georgia scenery before bringing you to the falls—and once you get there, don't be in a hurry to leave.

Pack a lunch. Find a spot near the water. Sit awhile.

On warm days, you may even find families swimming and playing along the shore.

Our Kismet tip?
Don't make the waterfall the only reason you're there.

Take your time getting to it.

This is one of those places where the journey is every bit as lovely as the destination.
