I am proud to call Enid home. There are lots of amazing people that have called Enid "home" over the years.
ENID LEGEND: LEONA MITCHELL
From a church choir in Enid to the stage of New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Leona Mitchell’s remarkable journey proves that world-class greatness can begin right here at home. Born in Enid in 1949, Leona was the tenth of 15 children born to Reverend Hulon and Pearl Mitchell. Her earliest performances weren’t beneath the bright lights of a famous opera house—they were in her father’s church, with her mother accompanying the choir on piano.
After graduating from Enid High School, Leona attended Oklahoma City University on a music scholarship and later studied at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. She made her professional debut with the San Francisco Opera before joining the Metropolitan Opera in 1975. For 18 seasons, Leona performed as a leading soprano at the Met, taking on some of opera’s most demanding roles. Her extraordinary career carried her to celebrated stages around the world, where she performed alongside Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras—the legendary Three Tenors.
Leona earned a Grammy Award for her performance as Bess in the complete recording of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. She also performed for multiple United States presidents and sang during the nationally televised celebration of the Statue of Liberty’s 100th anniversary in 1986. Her accomplishments have earned her induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. She was also named Oklahoma’s State Cultural Ambassador.
Enid has proudly honored her with Leona Mitchell Boulevard, a place on the Enid Walk of Fame and the Leona Mitchell Southern Heights Heritage Center and Museum. Leona Mitchell didn’t simply leave Enid and find success—she carried Enid with her onto some of the greatest stages in the world. Her story remains a powerful reminder to every young person growing up here that your beginning does not determine how far your gifts can take you.
Leona Mitchell is more than an Enid success story. She is an Oklahoma treasure, a Grammy-winning artist and a true hometown legend.
How many people in Enid knew that one of the world’s greatest operatic voices began right here in our community?
