On this day 161 years ago (June 6, 1865), Andrew Borden and Abby Durfee Gray were married.

Abby became stepmother to Andrew’s daughters, Emma and Lizzie, and a central figure in the Borden household.

By the time of their deaths in 1892, Andrew and Abby had shared nearly 30 years of marriage.

🏠 Welcome to the New & Improved Lizzie Borden House! 🪓

This year marks two incredible milestones:
🪓 5 years since US Ghost Adventures purchased and began restoring the property in May 2021.
🪓 30 years of the Lizzie Borden House being open to the public as a historic bed & breakfast, museum, and one of America’s most recognizable historic landmarks.

Over the last five years, our President and Founder, Lance Zaal, and the entire team have invested more than $250,000 into restoring, preserving, protecting, and enhancing this historic home.

Our goal has never been simply to stage a crime scene for entertainment. We believe the Lizzie Borden House should serve as an interactive living history experience. One that honors the people who lived here, remembers the victims, and preserves this remarkable piece of American history for future generations.

Here are just a few of the major improvements we’ve made:
🪓Historically Accurate Restoration
We’ve given the exterior a stunning new paint scheme matched directly to original 1892 paint flakes discovered on the house. We’ve also installed a durable metal roof, added period-accurate shutters, and are currently installing a custom-built replica of the original 1892 fence.

🪓A Completely Reimagined Tour
For the first time in more than 20 years, we’ve rewritten and reorganized our house tour to create a more immersive, engaging, and easy-to-follow experience.

🪓Authentic Crime Scene Recreation
We’ve meticulously recreated the sitting room to match the original 1892 crime scene photographs, including a custom-built table and replica rug.

🪓 Honoring Andrew and Abby Borden
While Lizzie remains the most famous figure in the story, we believe it is essential to remember the real victims. We’re creating a beautiful new memorial garden where guests can pay their respects to Andrew and Abby Borden.

🪓 Expanded Museum Collection
Visitors can now see the iconic dress worn by Elizabeth Montgomery in the 1975 film, original film reels, Lizzie’s personal books, the Borden family Bible, and other rare artifacts.

🪓 Upgraded Overnight Stays
Spending the night at America’s Most Haunted House should be unforgettable for all the right reasons. We’ve upgraded mattresses, bedding, blackout shades, bathrooms, kitchen facilities, and added smart locks to improve comfort while preserving the home’s historic character.

🪓 New Immersive Experiences
Step back in time with our Victorian Dinners or enjoy our wonderfully elegant Victorian tea parties.

🪓 Next-Level Ghost Hunting at America’s Most Haunted House
For paranormal enthusiasts, we’ve taken investigations to the next level. Guests can use our proprietary ghost-hunting equipment—including the Sinister Speaker V2 and Hades Eye during tours, investigations, and overnight stays. These innovative tools are also available for purchase in our newly renovated gift shop.

On this day 99 years ago (June 1, 1927) Lizzie Borden died of pneumonia at the age of 66.

Even after her acquittal in the infamous 1892 murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, speculation and rumors continued to follow her for the rest of her life.

Though ostracized by many in Fall River who believed she was guilty, Lizzie remained in the city and eventually purchased the stately Maplecroft Mansion in the Historic Highlands District, where she lived until her death.

Oddly enough, her estranged sister Emma died from chronic nephritis just nine days after Lizzie's passing.

Lizzie’s friends held a small funeral for her at Maplecroft, and she was laid to rest in Oak Grove Cemetery, just a few feet away from where her father and stepmother were buried.

Nearly a century later, Lizzie Borden remains one of the most recognizable and debated figures in American true crime history, continuing to fascinate historians, researchers, and the public alike.

Our tour guide Ryk recalls a moment he noticed a woman in dark Victorian dress, complete with a hat and veil, standing outside the property.

After looking away for only a moment, the figure was gone—despite no clear place to exit or hide in that timeframe.

Could it be Lizzie's spirit visiting the place she once called home? 💭

Almost 115 years ago this June, Mary Peckham lived next door to the Moore family in Villisca, Iowa. On the morning of June 10, 1912, she was the first to notice something was wrong.

The Moore children hadn’t come out to do their morning chores, and the house was eerily still and quiet.

Mary decided to go over to check on the family, and what she discovered in the house next door became one of the most infamous unsolved crimes in American history.

One year ago, less than 100 feet from the Villisca Axe Murder House, the historic home where Mary stood on that sad summer morning, was quietly falling apart.

Named for the woman who discovered the murders, the Mary Peckham House is a piece of history, part of the story behind the tragic events that took place in the small town of Villisca.

It’s still standing, and we’re committed to making sure it stays standing as a crucial part of the legacy of the property that is a memorial to the victims who lost their lives there.

Since preservation efforts began in preparation of the 30-year anniversary of the Villisca Axe Murder House opening its doors to the public, an incredible amount of time, care, and craftsmanship have gone into saving and restoring this historic property, including the beginnings of floor-to-ceiling structural repairs, detailed cleaning and stabilization, electrical and plumbing updates, and detailed work to honor the home’s original character.

The preservation team and on-site construction crew have approached every inch of this house with the respect it deserves, and will continue to do so.

Similarly to the Lizzie Borden House, the Mary Peckham House stands as a reminder that preserving historic places also preserves the stories, people, and moments connected to them.

Stay tuned for updated photos that show the meticulous work being done to the house and will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible transformation as preservation continues.
