As the 44th Curtis Cup concludes this weekend, it is a fitting time to reflect on a remarkable connection between Moselem Springs Golf Club and one of amateur golf's most prestigious international competitions.
In 1954, the United States welcomed Great Britain & Ireland to historic Merion Golf Club for the 8th Curtis Cup Match. The American team entered the competition looking to reclaim the Cup after the 1952 match ended in a tie. Leading Team USA was first-time captain Edith Quier Flippin, one of the most accomplished amateur golfers of her generation.
A champion of both the Pennsylvania Women's Amateur and the Women's Eastern Amateur, Edith was highly respected throughout the game for her competitive achievements and leadership. Under her guidance, the United States team swept the opening foursomes matches and went on to defeat Great Britain & Ireland 6-3, returning the Curtis Cup to American hands.
For Moselem Springs, Edith's story carries even greater significance.
Edith Quier Flippin was the sister of Hawley Quier, founder of Moselem Springs Golf Club, and was instrumental in the club's early vision and development. Her passion for golf, particularly women's golf, helped shape the culture and aspirations of Moselem from its earliest days.
That vision would ultimately be realized on a national stage when Moselem Springs hosted the 1968 U.S. Women's Open, welcoming the greatest women golfers in the world just four years after opening. It remains one of the defining moments in our club's history and a testament to the standards established by the Quier family.
As we celebrate another Curtis Cup, we proudly remember Edith Quier Flippin: Curtis Cup Captain, champion amateur golfer, advocate for women's golf, and a key figure in the story of Moselem Springs Golf Club.

The history of Moselem Springs is not only written through the championships we have hosted, but through the extraordinary people who helped shape the game itself. Edith Quier Flippin's legacy remains one of the finest examples of that tradition.
