⛵️ A Tall Ship is Sailing into Charleston! 🇺🇸

If you’re visiting Folly Beach next week, here’s a fun addition to your itinerary!

The legendary U.S. Coast Guard Barque EAGLE, America’s Tall Ship, will be docked in downtown Charleston June 11–14. Standing nearly 300 feet long with towering masts and miles of rigging, she’s a stunning sight and a photographer’s dream.

Best of all? Public tours are free.

After a morning on the beach, head downtown and step aboard one of the most impressive sailing vessels you’ll ever see. Then grab dinner along the waterfront and make a day of it.

Bugby Plantation U-Pick officially opens tomato season Monday and if you’ve never been, it’s absolutely worth the short drive from Folly Beach.

These are hands-down some of the best tomatoes you’ll ever find. 🍅❤️

🌊 BEACH SAFETY MATTERS: KNOW HOW TO SPOT A RIP CURRENT 🌊

One of the most dangerous things about rip currents is that they often look calmer than the surrounding water. Many swimmers naturally drift toward the area with fewer breaking waves thinking it’s safer — but that “calm gap” can actually be fast-moving water pulling away from shore.

If you ever get caught in a rip current:
➡️ Stay calm
➡️ Don’t fight the current by swimming straight toward shore
➡️ Swim parallel to the beach until you escape the pull, then angle back in

A few signs to watch for:
• A darker or deeper-looking patch of water
• A break or gap in the wave pattern
• Choppy or swirling surface water
• Foam, seaweed, or debris moving steadily out to sea
• Waves breaking differently in one area than the rest of the beach

Folly’s sandbars and gullies shift constantly, so conditions can change daily — sometimes hourly with the tides. At low tide, you can often spot the sandbars and deeper channels more easily. As the tide changes, stronger currents can develop where those channels funnel water back out offshore.

A few good rules of thumb:
✔️ Swim near lifeguards whenever possible
✔️ Never let children swim unattended
✔️ Use flotation devices or boogie boards with leashes
✔️ If the waves are large and surfers are out in force, it may be safest to stay out of the water unless you’re a strong ocean swimmer

The ocean is beautiful — but always unpredictable. Respect the water and look out for one another. 💙

It’s a short drive from Folly or schedule a ride on the Folly Bus with Kory Isenburg. This could make for a really fun evening after a beach day. 🌴🍹

Guests staying at StarView Cottage may want to check out a new food truck now on Folly Beach! 🌮☀️

El Gordito Tacos y Burritos is located at 87 Center Street, right near the boat landing as you come onto the island.

I saw a post featuring their breakfast burritos and it definitely looked worth adding to the Folly food list. 🌯 They also offer lunch options tacos, quesadillas, tortas, wings, burgers, and more.

Always fun to see new local spots opening around Folly Beach. If any of our guests or locals try it, feel free to share your favorites below! 😊🌴

One of the most opportune times to visit Charleston is forthcoming. From May 22 – June 7, Charleston will host its renowned Spoleto & Piccolo Spoleto festival season, showcasing an array of live music, art, theater, outdoor performances, jazz, cultural events, and neighborhood concerts throughout downtown. Guests staying at StarView Cottage can experience the best of both worlds: relaxing beach days on Folly and evenings exploring Charleston’s vibrant arts scene, complemented by dinner downtown followed by live performances and waterfront strolls. Many events will take place outdoors in some of Charleston’s most historic areas, rendering it an enjoyable experience even for spontaneous attendees. After a full evening downtown, guests can unwind at the cottage, listening to the ocean from the porch. This balance of beach and culture is what makes this season particularly special. If visiting during festival season, it is advisable to check local event schedules in advance, as restaurants and performances tend to book quickly.
