A road trip from Fort Benton to Havre takes you through the heart of Montana's "Golden Triangle" and onto the historic
Hi-Line. The direct drive spans roughly
74 miles along US-87 North. The route is packed with fur-trade history, Lewis and Clark landmarks, and underground tunnels, it is best enjoyed as a slow-paced full-day trip.
Tour the reconstructed Historic Old Fort Benton fur trading post to see the oldest standing building in Montana. Walk the scenic path along the Missouri River to see the Old Fort Benton Bridge (the first steel bridge over the Missouri in Montana) and the poignant Old Shep Memorial, which honors Montana’s most famous loyal herding dog.
Stop just outside Loma to look over the confluence of the Marias and Missouri rivers. Stop for a treat at Ma's Cafe in Loma, a beloved local diner famous for its massive portions and homestyle cooking. Located next door, this is the go-to spot for fuel, snacks, and an ATM.

Havre offers a deep dive into Montana's Hi-Line history, featuring unique underground tours, military sites, and Native American history. The area is rich with late 19th-century and early 20th-century frontier history including the Havre Underground, specialized museums, and a 2,000-year-old buffalo jump.
