Days like today, when my brother Mitchell is having a particularly challenging day... I am so grateful for The Cardinal Bed & Breakfast.
I am grateful that my "job" is flexible when I am crying and can't move off the floor because I feel like I am failing him in every way.
I am grateful that my "job" is across the street and I don't have to be far away and can be home when needed.
I am grateful that my "job" is an escape when everything at home feels heavy even if I am cleaning someone's dirty sheets.
I am grateful that my "job" is an extension of my creativity and an a visual expression of what I want in life.
I am grateful this "job" has given me purpose and clarity.
I am grateful that my "job" brings me hope that it will not always be like this and we have so much more to accomplish! 🤍🌳

We have so many new people following along lately, and I realized a lot of you probably have no idea who we actually are 😂

So… hi!! We’re the family behind The Cardinal.

I’m Michelle. I figured out a little later in life that I really, really love cooking, feeding people and hosting. So because apparently I don’t know how to do anything halfway, I host themed women's dinners somewhat monthly with •table eleven•, I’m now in culinary school at Auguste Escoffier AND we, as of April 2026 own a Bed & Breakfast. 😂

Michael is my husband. We have been together for 18 years.He’s an Army veteran, a commercial A/V project manager here in DFW and the one who gets stuck figuring out how to make all of my random ideas actually happen.

Mitchell is my special needs brother. Mitch aka James Bond has Pervasive Delayed Developmental Disorder. We became his guardians in 2019 after my parents passed away, and honestly, he’s a huge part of why The Cardinal works for our family. I am his full time caregiver and this gives us something we can all be a part of together.

Then there’s Cash, 11 a local middle schooler who loves art, his best friends, and picking on his younger rocker and actor brother Austin, 9 who also attends a local elementary school. They’ve basically been dragged into this adventure whether they like it or not. 😂 They help, they taste test, they complain, they eat the food… you know, employees of the year!

And then there’s Brandon, 25, who lives in California and has very conveniently an entire life far away from the family business 😂. But when he comes to visit, we fully intend to put him to work. No free vacations at The Cardinal, sir.

And that’s us....

Just a woman going through finding who she is who had a crazy idea and decided to go for it and an incredible family who supports me every step of the way!

We’re still learning. Still figuring things out. Still changing things constantly.

But we love this little place and what it’s becoming!

So if you’re new here, welcome to The Cardinal!

While we were cleaning the 2-bedroom cottage for guests yesterday, we got a phone call that immediately sent us into GO MODE.

A local family suffered a tremendous loss in a fire, and we have given them a place to stay at The Cardinal Bed & Breakfast. Hopefully just to have a place to land, breathe, and feel a tiny bit of normal again.

This one hit me hard.
When I was younger, we lost our entire home to a fire in Malibu. I remember that feeling of your whole life changing in an instant. I remember the buckets of water from neighbors being thrown on the house, I remember my Aunt Janet taking Mitchell and I in and I remember my Mom and Dad doing everything they could to somehow make life still feel normal for us when absolutely nothing was normal.

So it feels a little full circle.

Of course, The Cardinal was still completely decorated from our last dinner... so we scrambled to tear it all down, clean everything up, and make it feel less like an event space and more like a home.

I’ve never been more grateful for this place than I am today. Grateful that when someone in our community needed somewhere to stay, we had somewhere to offer.

I wish my Mom and Dad could see The Cardinal. I wish they could see what we’ve built and everything it’s becoming. But on days like today, I can feel them.

Like somehow a little piece of what they gave me all those years ago is getting passed along to another family who needs it now.

Maybe The Cardinal was always supposed to be about more than breakfast and pretty rooms...
