Stories from Texana: What’s in a Name? 🤎
People sometimes ask us where the name Texana came from.
The interesting part is that the name came before the house.
Years ago, when I was teaching third grade in Sherman, Texas, I was teaching my students about local and Texas history when I came across the name Texana Dumas, the first settler baby born in Grayson County.
I loved the name Texana.
Later, I learned that the word has also been used to describe books, art, documents, artifacts, and other things connected with the history, geography, and culture of Texas.
That made me love it even more.
By then, Frank and I had begun talking about someday having a bed-and-breakfast in Fredericksburg. We knew that if that dream ever happened, we wanted it to celebrate Texas and the West — and we already knew what we would call it.
Texana.
In fact, we began finding and collecting things with the Texana name before we even owned the house.
So when we finally found the limestone house in Fredericksburg that felt like “the one,” the house may have been new to us — but its name had been waiting for it for years.
And that’s how Texana became Texana. 🤎
