Allegheny Trail House Allegheny Trail House is a Bicycle friendly, modern Bed and Breakfast located along the Great Allegheny Passage in Historic Downtown Frostburg.

Once known as both Mt. Pleasant and Frost Town, Frostburg came into being thanks to the National Road, which carried early 1800s travelers along an east-west corridor, past a small log home built by city founder Meshach Frost. The community became a stagecoach stop offering weary travelers drink and rest at local taverns and the service of blacksmith shops, or “smithies,” as they were commonly cal

led. Soon coal and the railroad made Frostburg a commercial center for mining. By the early 1900s, it was also home to State Normal School #2 – today Frostburg State University. The university’s first building, Old Main, could be seen from one of the town’s earliest homes – a stately brick structure inspired by Greek revival Italianate architecture. Constructed in 1865 by Henry B. Shaffer, the prominent Frostburg businessman and citizen made a home there with his large family. Several of his ten children remained long after Henry’s passing in 1897. Today this wonderful old home – well known as the “Shaffer House” – still stands at 156 East Main Street. Registered as a historic property, it is finding new life as the Allegheny Trail House, Frostburg’s first and only bike friendly bed and breakfast. The home is located in historic downtown Frostburg – within walking distance to the FSU campus, unique restaurants, shops and, yes, a “tavern” or two. Best of all, it is a short pedal from the Great Allegheny Passage, with the local trailhead situated just a half-mile or so from the B&B. Whether by bicycle or automobile, once you’ve arrived in our community, Jason will be on hand to make sure your stay at the Allegheny Trail House is one you’ll remember – and an experience you’ll wish to return for again! All these years removed from yet linked to its simple beginnings, Frostburg today offers what could be called “the perfect patchwork mix” of sorts – small town charm coupled with the cultural benefits most often known only to residents of more urban communities. Once welcoming stagecoach travelers, it now invites bicyclists making their way along the Great Allegheny Passage. In an interesting twist of fate, Jason, as resident host of the Allegheny Trail House, reside just down the street from where Meshach and his bride once made their home in the small log structure built on Frostburg’s “Lot 1.” They are most happy to open the doors of their B&B to each and every guest and, in welcoming them to stay and rest a while, provide an insider’s perspective on all that makes their town so special.

Trail Alert: Restricted Access to Point State Park During NFL Draft

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is sharing information about temporary closures and access changes at Point State Park related to the 2026 NFL Draft Experience South.

To support event setup and ensure public safety and efficient operations, site preparation at Point State Park will begin on Monday, April 10, 2026. During this period, the sections of the Great Allegheny Passage and the Three Rivers Heritage Trail within the park, and public restroom facilities, are expected to remain open. Other areas of the park may be temporarily closed.

Beginning Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 2:00 pm, the Great Allegheny Passage Western Terminus, Fountain Plaza, City Side Lawn, Great Lawn, and public restrooms will be closed to public access as final event preparations take place.

From Thursday, April 23, 2026, through Saturday, April 25, 2026, all visitors must enter Point State Park during event hours through designated pedestrian entrances and follow established safety procedures. Information on entrance locations, restrictions, safety procedures, and hours of operation will be available through the NFL OnePass app. The recently-reconfigured connecting ramp carrying the Great Allegheny Passage between the Monongahela Wharf and Point State Park will be closed. No bicycles will be allowed into Point State Park at any entrance during this time.

Winter riding on the Great Allegheny Passage? Snow problem with fat tires!

When the GAP picks up a light blanket of snow, it becomes an incredibly peaceful place to ride, and fat bike tires make all the difference. With the right setup, winter cycling can be a smooth, quiet, and refreshing way to enjoy the trail when crowds are low and the landscape is at its most serene. Just preserve tracks made by cross-county-skiers and snowshoers!

Higher-elevation sections of the GAP, like Meyersdale to the Eastern Continental Divide and the stretch from the Mason & Dixon Line to Frostburg, tend to see colder temperatures and more consistent snow, making wider tires especially helpful for stability and control. Ohiopyle State Park is another winter favorite, where deeper snows and forested surroundings create a stunning backdrop for a fat-tire ride.

As always, plan ahead for winter conditions and remember that the Big Savage Tunnel is closed during the winter months to protect its inner lining. Dress for the weather, check conditions before you go, and enjoy a calm, scenic ride on the GAP all winter long.
