On April 20th our Moody Gardens Birding Team "Seaside Chats", set out at 5:30am for a 15.5-hour long expedition around Galveston Bay counting bird species. From the eastern half of Galveston County to Chambers County, to Baytown, to Kemah- we traveled over 205 miles and saw 184 birds!
This Big Day was part of the Great Texas Birding Classic's 30th Anniversary! This birding competition is one of the largest and longest-running birdwatching tournaments in the country! It is held each spring during peak migration and runs all month-long. This event challenges teams to find and identify as many bird species as possible—all while raising critical funds for bird conservation and habitat projects across Texas!
Moody Gardens is proud to support Texas Parks and Wildlife and all of the great work they continue to do here in Gaveston! We encourage you, even if you are a seasoned pro, or a complete newbie- to head outside and enjoy all of the wonderful nature around you!
Remember, birding is for EVERYONE and you can do it in your own backyard...or travel down to Moody Gardens to see the surplus of species that hang out around our campus. Whatever floats your boat!
