Scurlock Farms Vacation Rentals has two unique properties, from a single room cabin to a gorgeous custom-built house that sleeps 8. Leave your cares behind and relax on this working farm as you spend your mornings interacting with chickens, horses, goats and cows then head down to the San Gabriel River in the afternoon and do a bit of fishing. I will never forget one of our guests at Scurlock Farms from several years ago. Tom and his wife were from England, and were visiting Texas for the first time. They stayed in The Palette Pad for one week. Tom was a big guy, tall and muscular. On the morning they were departing, I saw him standing in the doorway dressed in his new Texas garb - a 10 gallon Stetson hat and cowboy boots! I stopped and wished them a good trip back to England, and when I asked if they had had a good time, Tom answered like a true Texan, "Yep!".

Today's entertainment at Scurlock Farms was provided free of charge by a very large raccoon.

After putting out some table scraps in the front yard for my dog, I was standing in the dining room when I spotted what looked like a masked face peering through the greenery at the edge of the bluff. A moment later, the entire raccoon emerged—a hefty fellow about the size of a medium dog.

He stood there sniffing the air like a food critic assessing a five-star restaurant. Apparently deciding the buffet was worth investigating, he began a slow, cautious march toward the front of the house.

I quietly slipped to the side door and eased it open. Mr. Raccoon never noticed. Then I opened the screen door and let out my best banshee scream.

Y'all... that raccoon achieved liftoff.

I've never seen anything that furry leave the ground that fast. He launched straight into the air, spun around, and disappeared down the bluff as if chased by a pack of hounds.

I'm pretty sure he lost one of his nine lives.

We laughed so hard we could barely stand up. Poor guy probably ran all the way to the next county and is still telling his raccoon friends about the crazy woman on the bluff.
