July 2, 1863 was a painful full-body experience for the namesakes of 3 of our guest rooms here at the Lightner Farmhouse B&B.
Captain Greenlief Stevens of the 5th Maine Light Artillery was shot through both legs; Captain Elias Monfort of the 75th Ohio was shot in the hip; Private John Chase of the 5th Maine had a cannon ball explode in front of him, losing an arm, eye and producing 48 wounds to the body. All ended up at the house of Sheriff Isaac Lightner, then a hospital for the 1st Division of the 1st Corps of the Union Army.
