July 2, 1863 was a painful full-body experience for the namesakes of 3 of our guest rooms here at the Lightner Farmhouse B&B.

Captain Greenlief Stevens of the 5th Maine Light Artillery was shot through both legs; Captain Elias Monfort of the 75th Ohio was shot in the hip; Private John Chase of the 5th Maine had a cannon ball explode in front of him, losing an arm, eye and producing 48 wounds to the body. All ended up at the house of Sheriff Isaac Lightner, then a hospital for the 1st Division of the 1st Corps of the Union Army.

On April 10, 1891, Dr. George W. New, Surgeon-in-Chief of the 1st Division of the 1st Corps at Gettysburg, died at his home in Indianapolis.

About July 1, 1863 Dr. New wrote historian John Bachelder that he “opened the first hospital for our wounded, the Lutheran Theological Seminary” and later that day, “took possession…of a small white church building on the Baltimore Road, also the house and barn of Mr. Lightner.”

Spring is such an amazing time of year. The birds singing, the bees buzzing (a little too close as I was taking these pics) and the smell of a fragrant hyacinth is so invigorating.

Snowdrops are perennials that bloom in the early spring, sometimes even pushing through snow in the coldest regions. They have a very deep meaning behind them. As one of the first flowers of spring, they often symbolise new beginnings, hope, rebirth and the ability to overcome challenges. What a beautiful way to start our season here at Lightner Farmhouse.
