🔥 ROSS FIRE UPDATE — SEPTEMBER 8, 2026 🔥
More encouraging progress this morning on the massive Ross Fire in Jack and Palo Pinto Counties.
The fire remains at approximately 90,400 acres and is now 57% contained. Crews continue making solid progress strengthening containment lines and working deeper into the burned area to locate and extinguish remaining hot spots.
🚁 Multiple aircraft are actively supporting the operation this morning, working alongside crews on the ground. Air resources are assisting with flare-ups and pockets of remaining fuel while heavy equipment continues improving containment lines on both flanks.
Today’s focus remains extensive mop-up operations, with crews working at least 132 feet inside the fire’s edge, searching for heat sources and any potential spot fires that could threaten containment.
⚠️ The biggest concern moving forward is the weather.
Hot and dry conditions remain in place, with temperatures around 100°F, afternoon humidity near 30%, and south/southeast winds. Gusts could reach around 20 mph, putting additional pressure on the western side of the fire.
There is also increasing concern later this week as isolated thunderstorms become possible. While rain would obviously be welcome, thunderstorms could also produce strong, erratic outflow winds and lightning, potentially testing containment lines or causing new fire starts.
🔥 The good news: containment continues increasing, crews are gaining ground, and the fire remains within its current footprint.
The next several days will be important. Even at 57% containment, this remains a very large active wildfire with significant heat still inside the perimeter.
