Shadowcliff Mountain Lodge & Retreat Center A mountain sanctuary. We believe in healing, growth, hospitality, and community.
(1)

For us, the word sanctuary means a safe place for personal and community retreat and renewal. We commit to be a part of the change that is necessary to live in harmony with the natural environment and this planet that we call home. Our workshops and educational opportunities at Shadowcliff grow out of this mission and our respect for Shadowcliff’s rich tradition of being a mountain sanctuary for retreat, renewal and change. Shadowcliff's tagline - inspiring the journey - suggests that whether guests come to Shadowcliff as individuals, families, or part of a larger group, we want to provide an atmosphere that inspires their personal or organizational journey, provides hope and inspiration for the future, and educates and informs us about the choices we make. We want guests to leave Shadowcliff believing that change and renewal is possible and that they are part of that change.

Join us for our last wellness event of the season. This Friday, October 9, sound healing practitioner Jenna Hinkel will facilitate an immersive evening of rest, resonance, and renewal.

Practicing in Shadowcliff’s historic chapel, overlooking Grand Lake and the surrounding mountains, participants are invited to lie down and receive the layered tones of crystal singing bowls, chimes, drums, and other instruments. As waves of sound move through the space, the body is gently guided toward stillness, balance, and ease.

Sometimes described as a “sound bath”, this practice uses vibration and frequency to support relaxation and nervous system regulation. Many people find that sound healing helps quiet the mind, release tension, and create a sense of calm, clarity, and emotional openness. Over time, it can support deeper rest, restore energy, and reconnect us with our natural rhythms.

There is nothing you need to do—this is a fully receptive experience. You are invited to simply rest, listen, and allow the sound to carry you inward.

Join us tonight in the chapel at Shadowcliff for a conversation with Denver-based sketch artist Paul Heaston.

Since 2007, Paul has kept a daily sketching practice and filled more than 100 sketchbooks. He has taught sketching workshops in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Chicago through UrbanSketchers.org, and his work appears in books on urban sketching and figure drawing. Tonight he’ll demonstrate his sketchbook techniques live and take your questions, in Shadowcliff’s historic chapel overlooking the lake and the mountains.

This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

Thursday, October 1, 7 to 8 p.m.
The Chapel at Shadowcliff, 105 County Road 663, Grand Lake

This is the first of three days of Faces & Places Grand Lake, where ten Colorado artists paint and sketch around town. Tomorrow they’ll be painting along the boardwalk and shoreline from 9 to 4. On Saturday, there will be a Community Portrait Marathon and a pop-up sale at the Grand Lake Community House. See slides for the full schedule and to meet the artists.

Presented in partnership with Grand Lake Creative District and Colorado Ambassadors for the Portrait Society of America.

Join mosaic artist Brenda Fraser for a conversation about making art and finding healing using jewelry that holds family memories and love on Saturday, September 26 at 3:00pm.

Brenda assembles mosaics from vintage jewelry and found objects as a way to honor matrilineal lineage. Her work draws on the natural world, the American West, and a deep conviction that beauty and wholeness can emerge from broken things—discarded and overlooked objects that still carry memory, energy, and meaning. She’ll share her background and creative journey, walk participants through her process, and reflect on her time in residence at Shadowcliff.

This talk is part of Shadowcliff’s 2026 Still Point Sessions, bringing artists to the mountains for a week of creative work in Grand Lake. Supported, in part, by a grant from the Town of Grand Lake Donor Advised Fund

Join saxophonist and multidisciplinary artist Matana Roberts for an evening of new solo saxophone improvisations in Shadowcliff’s historic chapel.

Roberts is perhaps best known for Coin Coin, an ongoing twelve-part cycle weaving together history, narrative, community, and political life into what they’ve called “panoramic sound quilting.” They’ve performed at Newport Jazz Festival, Big Ears, Berliner Festspiele, and concert halls across Europe and the US. Their work has been described as soul-baring, transporting, and “like getting a glimpse into another dimension.”

This performance is part of Shadowcliff 2026 Still Point Sessions, bringing artists to the mountains for a Weekes of creative work in Grand Lake. Supported, in part, by a grant from the Town of Grand Lake Donor Advised Fund.

On Sunday, we said goodbye to this year’s Artist Residency cohort. But the residue of their time here is still very much present.

For two weeks, five artists working in dance, photography, poetry, and music joined us in the mountains, venturing into the park to hear elk bugle, visiting a wetland restoration site, sharing meals, and sharing their work with one another and our community at Friday’s public event.

Nick Walther from Sky-Hi News was there and captured it beautifully.

You can read the full story at the link in our bio.

Thank you to Kimberly Bartosik, Tommy Kha, Saretta Morgan, Ethan Philbrick, and Debra Yepa-Pappan for bringing your full selves to Grand Lake. Thank you to everyone who came out to meet them. And thank you to Nick Walther at Sky-Hi News for covering the event.

Presented in partnership with Grand Lake Creative District. Supported by the Teazey Foundation and a Colorado Creates Grant through Colorado Creative Industries and the NEA.

The season isn’t over — join us for two more Still Point Sessions events: saxophonist Matana Roberts on Tuesday, Sept 22, and mosaic artist Brenda Fraser on Saturday, Sept 26.

Meet Ethan Philbrick, one of Shadowcliff’s five artists-in-residence.

Ethan is a cellist, artist, and writer based in Brooklyn, NY, whose interdisciplinary work spans music, theater, and dance, including the musical-theatrical project DAYS. His work moves between the politics of musical instruments, the history of anticapitalist critique through vocal collectivity, and the relationship between music and dance. It’s been called “overwhelmingly beautiful” and “extremely strange” by The Nation.

Join us Friday, September 11 at 7:30 PM at the Grand Lake Community House to hear from Ethan and the other artists-in-residence working across dance, photography, poetry, music, and visual art.
