HIGHLIGHTED OPENINGS: Bearskin Lodge is mostly full for summer, but we’re highlighting a few remaining cabins that might be a perfect fit for your schedule.

White Pine Cabin 8 is Bearskin’s least expensive cabin, a small 2-bedroom cabin that’s a perfect “starter cabin” for families or couples. Basic, but super cute and cozy, plus close to the beach and playground area. Many long-time Bearskin guests had their first cabin experience in White Pine. This cabin has flexible booking dates and while it’s often booked for full weeks, you can plan a trip for any available time of 3 nights or more.

Here are some open dates in White Pine Cabin 8: July 1 - July 3; July 6 -July 11; July 18 - July 25; August 15 -17. Give us a call (218) 388-2292 or email stay@ bearskin.com. More info at www.bearskin.com

Exciting loon news — the loons on the Chik-Wauk Loon Nest Cam have a new baby. The first egg hatched late this afternoon. This is when it gets fun, as we will get to watch the chick’s daily progress. At this point the chick is a bit of a gray fuzzball, so watch for it every time the parent shifts or raises a wing. It’s a noisy little thing and fortunately, the mic on this set-up is excellent so you might hear the new family member before you spot it. EDIT WITH MORE INFO: the second egg was visible this morning on the camera (picture in comments), then later in the morning it was gone. People have rewound the tape and think the parent knocked it off the nest, either accidentally or purposely. Interesting.

Nest in place April 30, 2026. Another view of the loons nest can be seen at this link,https://www.sundewtech.net/chikwauk/chikwaukcam.jpgSome ice still remai...

Will you be here this coming Monday? Drive up to trail to Chik-Wauk for this excellent loon presentation. Wildlife sightings along the Trail have been absolutely bonkers this past week (as is often the case in very early June) so if you head up for this loon presentation, keep a watchful eye out for our other Trail critters.

Coming up on Monday, June 8, Loons at Chik-Wauk! Stop by from 1:00–2:00 p.m. for a fascinating presentation by Naturalist Caroline and learn more about Minnesota’s beloved state bird.

Adding to the excitement, a loon’s nest with two eggs is located just behind the presentation area. With a little luck, one of the chicks may even hatch during the presentation—what an unforgettable experience that would be!

Northern lights alert for the next few nights and the coming week. We have some potential aurora action coming up, due to geomagnetic solar storms on the sun. If the skies are clear and you’re at Bearskin or on the Gunflint Trail, it’s “eyes to the skies” for the week ahead. Any of the dates shown in red on this bar graph have some potential for northern lights.

From a scientific standpoint dates near the summer solstice are not an exceptionally good time for high aurora activity. The equinoxes are known to be the better dates. But from anecdotal standpoint photographers at Bearskin have taken a lot northern lights pictures in past years between June 6 -18 — we will see if we add to this run of good luck. 🤞🏻

If you want to plan to take aurora photos, here’s all the info you need about photographing the northern lights at Bearskin Lodge: https://bearskin.com/bearskin-lodge-photography-series-chasing-the-northern-lights-on-the-gunflint-trail/

HIGHLIGHTED OPENING: Bearskin Lodge is mostly full for summer, but we’re highlighting a few of the very best remaining openings.

ONLY ONE SUMMER SEASON OPENING LEFT IN THIS CABIN — Gorgeous Log Cabin #9, Sunday June 21 - Sunday June 28. (Or book this for a shorter stay.) This is our first week of free family activities. We will keep your kids and family members SO busy!

Spacious, high-end 2-bedroom log cabin built from hand-peeled Engelmann spruce, featuring a stunning stone fireplace and classic Northwoods charm. Because this is a close-in opening, here’s one of the rare peak summer times when Cabin 9 can be rented for a shorter visit. If you’ve always wanted to stay in one of the “luxury log cabins,” but don’t have a full week open, this is your chance. Stay Sunday - Sunday (7days, price of 6), or choose Monday-Friday (beat the Hwy 61 traffic), or we’ll also break it into two shorter stays.
