July 4 falls on a Saturday this year, and the week around it is the single busiest stretch we book all summer. On the Currituck waterfront, peak July weeks tend to run 80%+ booked by mid-June — and right now we're only about four weeks out from the holiday.

If you've been circling a July stay, this is the window to lock it. We're 3 BR, sleeps 6, sound-front on the mainland side — which puts H2OBX Waterpark 10 minutes south and Wright Brothers Memorial 25, while you skip the bridge traffic the oceanfront crowds sit in. Pets stay free, no breed limits.

Currituck Sound is freshwater, so July mornings on our dock are flat-calm before the wind picks up around 10 — the best kayaking of the day. We keep three kayaks under the deck for guests.

The freshest seafood on the Outer Banks usually hasn't crossed the Wright Memorial Bridge yet.

Most visitors assume the best fish is oceanfront. A lot of it lands mainland-side first — Currituck and the sound supply crab and rockfish that turn up on menus 10 minutes from our door. Powells Point Restaurant is the closest sit-down seafood to Grandy Cove, a 10-minute drive south.

A few things our guide gets into: blue crab peaks May through October, so a June stay lands you in the early run; soft-shell season is short and worth timing; and which spots are actually worth the 25-minute drive across to the barrier islands — and which aren't.

Currituck Sound is freshwater, not Atlantic, so the local catch here skews to blue crab and striped bass, not only ocean fish. Our guests cook plenty of it back at the house — the kitchen's full-size, granite counters, room for six to crowd in.

The living room faces west, straight at Currituck Sound, and the windows run floor to ceiling — so the room lights itself after about 7pm in June. We've watched guests plan a night out and then not leave, because the blue sofa lines up with the water and nobody wants to give up the seat.

It's open plan: the kitchen, the dining table for six, and the sofa all share the same wall of glass. Currituck Sound is freshwater, not Atlantic, so the surface goes flat once the wind drops around 6pm — and the herons come out to fish along the far marsh. You can follow the whole thing without leaving the cushions.

The TV is there if you want it. Most evenings it stays off. Day two is usually when people stop reaching for the remote.

3 BR, sleeps 6, pets welcome — no fees, no breed limits. Wright Brothers Memorial is 25 minutes south if you do decide to head out.

Hurricane season on the Outer Banks starts June 1 — that's five days from today. Here's what most OBX travel guides skip: June and July combined average less than one named-storm landfall on the entire U.S. coast. The peak risk window is mid-August through early October, when the Cape Verde systems track north.

If you're booked or considering a stay before mid-August, the season label is mostly admin — not a forecast. The historical numbers don't punish early summer.

A few things worth knowing if you're planning further out:

– Currituck Sound sits sheltered behind the barrier islands, so even tropical-system surge that reaches the OBX hits the ocean side first.
– We're on the mainland side, west of the Wright Memorial Bridge. Evacuation routes from Grandy go inland, not across a causeway.
– Late-summer rates drop and crowds thin — the trade-off for the higher-risk window.

Our full guide walks through the actual hurricane probabilities by month, what to watch on the NHC, and how our cancellation policy works if a named storm forms.

Most Outer Banks rentals lead with the beach. We lead with the dock — because the trip changes when you're sound-side instead of ocean-side.

Grandy sits on the mainland side of Currituck County, west of the Wright Memorial Bridge. The whole barrier-island lineup — Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Duck, Corolla — is a 25 to 50 minute drive across the bridge. Wright Brothers Memorial is 25 minutes. Jockey's Ridge, the largest natural sand dune east of the Mississippi, is 30. Currituck Beach Lighthouse, 45.

What that buys you: a private dock on freshwater Currituck Sound, which runs 65–68°F in late May while the Atlantic surf is still mid-50s. Calmer water, so the three kayaks under our deck are usable by anyone — not just confident paddlers. H2OBX Waterpark is 10 minutes south. Sanctuary Vineyards, 5 minutes east. Sunny Side Up for breakfast, Currituck BBQ Company for dinner — both inside 15 minutes.

The trade is real: nearest ocean beach is a 25-minute drive, not a walk. But you also skip Friday-afternoon bridge traffic, oceanfront crowd density, and the surcharge that comes with sand under the slider.

The master bedroom is the only one with its own balcony. Two rocking chairs out there, west-facing, looking past the boardwalk to Currituck Sound.

The king bed sits about eight steps from the slider — close enough that coffee from bed to balcony is a one-trip operation. Anchor-pattern bedding and nautical lamps that lean coastal without going kitsch. There's a desk if someone needs to take a call without leaving the room, and a TV with the streaming services you actually use.

Two things guests tend to figure out by day two:

- The sound is west, so morning light hits the front of the house and leaves the master quiet until you're ready to wake up.
- Sunset sits directly over the boardwalk view. Herons start fishing the cove past 6pm, and most evenings the chop dies and the water glasses out.

The balcony shares the second-floor view with the living-room windows, but you have it to yourself with the door closed. The other two bedrooms sleep four — pile the kids and the dog there, take the master, and the house breathes right.

Memorial Day weekend is 7 days out.

Currituck waterfront on this stretch books to 80%+ by mid-May most years, and the four nights between May 22 and 26 are the tightest of the spring. The dock that ran empty most weekday mornings last week jumps to $310/night next Friday. Sanctuary Vineyards opens at 11am on the holiday — five minutes east. Wright Brothers Memorial is 25 minutes south.

A few things worth knowing if you're still deciding:

- Currituck Sound is running 68°F right now. Warmer than the Atlantic on the same date, comfortable enough that an accidental wet kayak exit isn't a crisis.
- We host pets with no fees and no breed restrictions, so the dog comes too.
- Three kayaks under the deck, free for guests. The protected coves on the western side stay calm enough for kids and first-timers, even on holiday weekend wind.

Direct-book skips the service fees Airbnb and VRBO stack on top — that's a tank of gas, dinner for 6, or a half-day on the water.

Most dog-friendly OBX guides skip the part that matters most in May: which trails work, and when.

By July, the sand on Jockey's Ridge runs hot enough to burn paws after 10am on the exposed dunes. Mid-May is the window for the open ground. Daytime temps still sit between 65 and 75°F, and the maritime-forest trails on the mainland and Atlantic side both stay walkable all day, even through August.

A few stretches we send guests toward:

- Currituck Banks Reserve — boardwalk through marsh and maritime forest, dogs welcome on leash
- Nags Head Woods Preserve, ~30 minutes south, shaded under live oak even at midday
- The Wright Brothers Memorial grounds, 25 minutes, leash on, mostly grass and asphalt

We host pets with no fees and no breed restrictions. A dog crate, pet bed, and feeding station already wait inside — three kayaks under the deck for after the trail.

The kitchen island faces the slider out to the deck — and the dock past that. That orientation is the point.

Blue crab traps on Currituck Sound start producing the first week of May and run through October. There's a cleaning station at the bottom of our boardwalk so the fish stays outside, and the kitchen handles the rest. Full-size stainless appliances — dishwasher, gas range, the works. Granite counters that handle a steamer pot without a trivet. White cabinets, sink built into the island, bar stools on the open side so someone can keep talking to whoever's cracking crab.

Most guests don't notice until day two that the sunrises light the far marsh on the sound while they're pouring the first coffee.

Sanctuary Vineyards is 5 minutes east if you want a Currituck red for the dinner. The Cotton Gin stocks Old Bay and lemons. Both open before you'd plan to start the boil.

3 bedrooms, sleeps 6, private dock, pets welcome with no fees and no breed restrictions.
