Once welcoming legends like Louis Armstrong, James Brown, and Ray Charles, now offering 4 luxury rooms, brunch & dinner options, live music, and unforgettable gatherings. During America’s period of segregation, the Magnolia House Motel accommodated traveling African Americans who were not allowed to share the same eating and sleeping facilities as Caucasians. In the 1950s and '60s, many prominent

African Americans stayed either at this home or on what was called "The Gorrell St Guest List". Martin Luther King Jr. , Coretta Scott King, & Cornell West. Prominent African American's that stayed in the Magnolia House included James Brown, Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, Joe Tex, Carter G. In addition to housing celebrities, the Magnolia House accommodated the families of students attending the historically black schools of Bennett College and North Carolina A&T State University. It also served the community as a place for wedding receptions and other formal gatherings. The Magnolia House Motel (known by its formal name, the Daniel D. Debutts House) is on the National Register of Historic Places and is in the South Greensboro National Register Historic District.

💚 A LOVE STORY THAT STARTED AT MAGNOLIA

Before the accolades. Before the history they would make. Before the legacy they would build together, there was a love story that started right here at The Historic Magnolia House.

Justice Henry Frye and Mrs. Shirley Frye first met within these walls. 💚

He would go on to become the first African American elected to the North Carolina General Assembly since Reconstruction and later the first African American Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Mrs. Frye would build an incredible legacy of her own through service, leadership, education, and dedication to the Greensboro community.

But their story together?

That started right here.

Listen as the Fryes share the story of how they met at The Historic Magnolia House and how one moment became the beginning of a lifetime together.

Because sometimes history isn’t just made here. Sometimes, it falls in love here. 💚

Some places deeply embody history.

Congratulations to the Historic Magnolia House on becoming the first historic Green Book property in North Carolina listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

This remarkable achievement recognizes a place that offered safety, dignity, and welcome to Black travelers during segregation, while preserving an essential chapter of our nation's story.

In 2023, the historic Magnolia was also named one of the Top 25 Historic Hotels of America in Film and Television History. While the historic hotel itself has not yet been featured in a film or television show, it offers a chance to learn about the history of "The Negro Motorist Green Book" as it has been portrayed in film and television.

I'm especially proud that the Historic Magnolia House is a member of National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Hotels of America, where historic places continue to connect us to the people and stories that shaped our communities.

My congratulations to Natalie Miller, CEO and founder of the Historic Magnolia House, and to everyone whose vision and dedication made this milestone possible. Here's to ensuring places like the Historic Magnolia House continue inspiring future generations.
